Chelsea's move for Brighton striker Danny Welbeck has emerged as one of the biggest surprises of the summer transfer window.

For several years, Chelsea have prioritised signing the best young talent available, building one of the youngest squads in Europe. This summer, however, there has been a noticeable shift in strategy.

The Blues explored a move for Granit Xhaka earlier in the window, have been linked with Jordan Henderson, and are now closing in on one of the Premier League's most experienced forwards.

Rather than focusing solely on potential, Xabi Alonso appears determined to add proven leaders capable of raising standards both on and off the pitch.

Welbeck's performances last season do explain why Chelsea have identified him specifically, beyond just his Premier League know-how.

The 35-year-old enjoyed arguably the finest goalscoring campaign of his professional career as Brighton's leading striker. He scored 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances before finishing the season with 14 in all competitions, ending the campaign as Brighton's top scorer and helping the Seagulls secure another top-eight finish.

It was also enough to spark serious debate over whether he deserved a recall to Thomas Tuchel's England squad ahead of the World Cup.

Fabian Hürzeler regularly praised the striker's professionalism, work ethic and intelligence, qualities that allowed Brighton's younger attackers to flourish around him.

His pressing from the front remained among the best in the Premier League, while his movement created space for teammates and gave Brighton a reliable focal point in possession.

Those traits make the 35-year-old an understandable target for Alonso.

Ben Jacobs is a reliable transfer journalist and has strong relationships with Premier League clubs and agents. His update has been supported by talkSPORT and The Times, both of which report that Chelsea are progressing towards an agreement after opening talks over Welbeck.

Welbeck has one year remaining on his Brighton contract, placing the Seagulls in a position to think about selling rather than risk losing him for nothing. Chelsea are expected to negotiate a relatively modest deal compared to their recent spending.

Welbeck remains one of the Premier League's most intelligent centre-forwards. His movement and link-up play have aged exceptionally well, while his professionalism has earned widespread admiration throughout his career.

Welbeck would provide Chelsea with proven Premier League experience and leadership. His ability to mentor younger forwards while still contributing goals could make him an important squad player under Alonso.

Chelsea possess plenty of exciting young forwards, but consistency has often been lacking.

Welbeck would offer something different. His experience of winning trophies, competing in the Champions League and handling the demands of the Premier League could prove invaluable inside one of the division's youngest dressing rooms.

Chelsea agree broad terms with Danny Welbeck as Brighton sanction sale

According to talkSPORT's Ben Jacobs, Chelsea have now taken a significant step towards completing the deal.

Jacobs says broad personal terms have already been agreed with Welbeck, while Brighton are prepared to sanction his departure and Chelsea are increasingly confident of agreeing a transfer fee, suggesting negotiations are progressing positively.

The development follows earlier reports that Chelsea had opened talks with Brighton after identifying Welbeck as an experienced addition to Alonso's squad.

With only a year remaining on his contract, Brighton appear willing to allow the striker to leave for the right price, particularly after receiving excellent service from him over the past six seasons.

During that spell, he became the club's all-time leading Premier League goalscorer and one of the most respected figures inside the dressing room.

Chelsea's interest may surprise many supporters given the club's recent recruitment model. However, Alonso's desire to introduce greater leadership and maturity is becoming increasingly obvious.

Welbeck would not be expected to play every week, but his influence across a demanding campaign could extend well beyond his minutes on the pitch.
