Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayA significant bright spot in the Toronto Blue Jays' bullpen has been the indispensable dominance of Louis Varland.
Recent rumors have surfaced about the Blue Jays trading him, with contending teams inquiring about the All-Star closer. But moving on from Varland would be extreme, even with the Blue Jays' struggles.
According to Jeff Passan, while the Blue Jays are sellers, their ace of the pen, who is boasts a 0.98 ERA while going 23-of-23 in save opportunities this season, is not available for trade. He is a controllable asset, who the Blue Jays have under club control through the 2030 season.
His elite performance, including a 0.964 WHIP and 73 strikeouts across 55 innings pitched has made him one of the top relievers in MLB alongside Mason Miller. Varland is also just the second relief pitcher in MLB history to record 20+ saves, with a sub-1.00 ERA and no blown saves across his first 50 appearances.

Louis Varland is the Blue Jays' most prized reliever
Varland has emerged as one of the best shutdown late-inning relievers in MLB and earlier this season he set a franchise record for the lowest ERA (0.29) across the first 28 games of a season.
He's been on another level this season, with a 34.6 % strikeout rate and a nasty knuckle curve that has generated a 37.5 % whiff rate. Varland has also provided dominance as a high-leverage reliever who has been highly effective pitching out of jams and locking down the Blue Jays pen.
His signature ''velocity slap'' has been a pre-game ritual that fans have enjoyed watching, with his bullpen coach giving him a two-handed slap on the back before before he enters the game.
Varland has also been a postseason workhorse, setting a major league record with 15 appearances in the Blue Jays' 2025 postseason run, illustrating his durability and value. Overall, if the Blue Jays were to trade him, the they would expect a massive return package as Varland is an elite late-inning bullpen arm.
