Blackburn Rovers have now made an approach to appoint a former Premier League manager as a replacement for Michael O'Neill.
O'Neill set to stay on as Northern Ireland manager
O'Neill has opted not to take the Blackburn job on a permanent basis, with the 56-year-old choosing to stay on as Northern Ireland manager, which means they will need to bring in a replacement very soon.
However, former striker Kevin Gallacher has suggested it could be difficult to attract a top manager, given the constraints at Ewood Park.
"This has been hanging on them for a few weeks. Now it's a case of moving forward. Steven Davis will go, Damien Johnson will still be here and will again be the caretaker at the moment.
"Maybe he can speak to Rudy and Suhail that matches Damien or goes above him. There won't be a shortage of interest, it's a Championship side.
"If you're an up-and-coming manager who wants a tough job with probably very little to spend, this is the ideal opportunity to get the CV in."
Despite his Burnley links, Scott Parker would be an exciting option, having won promotion from the Championship with three different clubs, and another former Premier League manager has also now emerged as a target.
Blackburn make approach to appoint "immense" manager
According to journalist Alan Nixon (via Football League World), Blackburn have now opened talks to appoint Slaven Bilic, but there could be competition for his signature, with Turkish side Amedspor also making contact.
Amedspor, who were recently promoted to the top flight, may offer the former Watford and West Bromwich Albion man more money, in order to convince him to move to Turkey, and Russell Martin is in the frame as a potential alternative, with the ex-Rangers boss also out of work.
Bilic, who prefers to implement a 4-2-3-1 formation, has been lauded as "immense" by former Premier League midfielder Lee Hendrie, and he is experienced in the Championship, taking charge of 71 matches, and winning promotion with West Brom in 2020.
The 57-year-old has also overseen 100 Premier League games, and maintained a solid record during his time with West Ham United, which suggests he could be a success at Ewood Park.
That said, the Croatian has been out of work since being sacked by Saudi Pro League side Al-Fateh in 2023, and Parker has two more promotions on his CV, proving himself at Burnley, Fulham and AFC Bournemouth.
As such, the Englishman is perhaps the ideal appointment for the Rovers, who have remained outside the Premier League since 2012, but it remains to be seen whether he would be willing to join the Clarets' major rivals.
There are other options on the shortlist too, with Blackburn also considering a move for a manager who has earned major plaudits from Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola.
