When your team nearly suffers relegation, it's not often that they are then able to welcome a batch of elite Premier League proven players to the club. However, for Tottenham Hotspur, they are no regular relegation threatened side.
With Roberto De Zerbi at the helm, the pulling power has already been immense this summer. Fears of another battle to beat the drop look long gone.
Legendary full-back Andy Robertson has joined from Liverpool and has been followed through the door by Marcos Senesi, one of the outstanding centre-backs in England last season.
Next up is Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton. He knows De Zerbi well and instantly, the Spurs backline looks like it'll be much improved.
Yet, they are not done there. The Lilywhites are set to make a splash at the top end of the pitch too.
Spurs ready to spend big in midfield and attack
In their bid to add Premier League ready players to the squad, the next cab off the rank would appear to be Savinho.
Tottenham made a move to sign the winger last summer but were ultimately fruitless in their endevours despite a series of bids. Manchester City refused to sell but one year on, it's a different story.
The Brazilian is now a spare part after the arrivals of Rayan Cherki and Antoine Semenyo, leading to a belief that Savinho could be sold to free up room. Spurs, therefore, at the front of the queue and are already in talks to seal the signing of the wide forward.
Alongside Senesi, Van Hecke and Robertson, it's obvious what the recruitment team's brief has been this summer; sign players with experience of English football, players who will need little adaptation time.

Well, there could be an even bigger signing on the horizon in the form of Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali. News broke at the beginning of the week revealing that he had become the club's leading target and due to his connection with De Zerbi - they both hail from Brescia in Italy - there is a feeling this move might actually get done.
Said to be keen on a move, the latest on their pursuit of the Italian comes courtesy of one Spurs insider who also provided key updates on the club's pursuit of Van Hecke.
Taking to social media, it was revealed that Tottenham have now agreed personal terms with Tonali on a long-term contract. Exciting news indeed, even if it may take £85m to get a deal done.
Why Tonali would be a better signing than Savinho
Spurs have done a phenomenal job already of improving their biggest weakness; the defence.
In Van Hecke, Senesi and Robertson, they have acquired three players who will definitely improve the backline and make them tougher to break down.
Yet, they also need more quality and added depth in attack. Savinho would bring that in spades.
Back in 2024/25, he registered as many as 13 assists. Compared to players at Man City, only Kevin De Bruyne with 2.1 made more key passes per 90 than Savinho (1.6) in the Premier League that term.
Yet, over the last year, he has struggled big time. The winger only scored one league goal during 2025/26 and picked up two assists. He started just seven Premier League matches.
Sure, he's proven in English football and he would be a solid pickup for the Lilywhites. However, De Zerbi does already have some excellent creative players at his disposal in the shape of Mohammed Kudus, James Maddison and if he can stay fit, Dejan Kulusevski.
Valued at £60m, is this the best use of funds this summer? Instead, they'd be better off injecting those funds into a major play for Tonali. This move feels like something of a pipe dream still but outside of the defence, the midfield was certainly the biggest issue last term.
All of the options at their disposal were far too one dimensional. They could break up play and shuttle in front of the backline but when you look at Conor Gallagher, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Matar Sarr, you hardly get progressive vibes. They are fine, but that is about it. They will not help when it comes to breaking the lines and progressing play.

Tonali, on the other hand, certainly would. Celebrated as "one of the best midfielders in the world" by agent Beppe Riso, he would help add an extra dimension to the middle of the park.
With three goals and seven assists in all competitions last campaign, he is not going to break open the game like Dele Alli or Christian Eriksen in their primes. No, he's more of a Luka Modric-esque player.
Tonali is something of a quarterback with a fine passing range and the ability to progress the ball. In the 2025/26 league season, the Italy international made 6.12 progressive carries per 90. It's not a truly swashbuckling number but it is a better tally than any midfielder managed at Spurs last season. Pape Matar Sarr topped the charts among positionally similar players with 5.56 per 90.
First and foremost, however, he's just generally an elite player. He's the type of signing that would make the league stand up and take notice.
Savinho would be a handy signing but Tonali is the real marquee addition here. It's a powerplay move that could finally take Tottenham to the next level. They have been crying out for an acquisition like this for years.
