The unbeaten Olympic silver medalist dropped Rivera twice before a second-round stoppage in an impressive first appearance on American soil

Ben Whittaker made a statement in his U.S. debut Saturday night, stopping Richard “Popeye” Rivera (27-3, 20 KOs) 27 seconds into the second round after scoring two knockdowns at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The unbeaten Briton showcased the speed and punch selection that have made him one of boxing’s most closely watched light heavyweight prospects.

Whittaker boxed with confidence from the opening bell, controlling range behind quick footwork and crisp combinations. Rivera tried to apply pressure, but Whittaker’s faster hands and cleaner punching kept the veteran on the defensive throughout.

The first knockdown came in the opening round when Whittaker connected with a sharp right hand that sent Rivera down. Although Rivera rose and attempted to fight back, he had little answer for Whittaker’s athleticism and accuracy.

Any hopes of a comeback disappeared moments into the second round. Whittaker unleashed another clean combination that floored Rivera again, prompting Griffin to stop the contest before further punishment could be absorbed.

The victory continues Whittaker’s run of increasingly impressive performances and gives him another highlight-reel finish to add to his growing resume. The Olympic silver medalist has been linked with bigger names in the light heavyweight division, and Saturday’s dominant U.S. debut is unlikely to slow that momentum.

Rivera showed his usual toughness but was simply outclassed by the younger, faster fighter, who looked comfortable performing on a major stage in front of an American audience.
