The high-stakes environment of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is known for intense pressure, nail-biting finishes, and fierce rivalries. However, amidst the extreme tension of the tournament, the cricket field also witnesses moments of pure, unadulterated comedy. Delhi Capitals (DC) captain Axar Patel recently gave fans a glimpse into one such side-splitting moment. Speaking on the Humans of Bombay YouTube channel, the Indian all-rounder recounted a hilarious miscommunication during a standard medical check that left both the team physiotherapist and the player in stitches.

Axar Patel narrates amusing IPL concussion test tale of Delhi Capitals’ explosive finisher

The incident revolved around DC’s explosive young finisher, Ashutosh Sharma, who has quickly earned a reputation for both his power-hitting and his eccentric, light-hearted personality. During a tense match, Ashutosh took a sharp blow to his helmet while batting. In accordance with standard cricket safety protocols, DC’s physiotherapist, Craig Anthony de Weymarn, rushed onto the field to conduct a mandatory concussion test.

Concussion protocols are usually solemn affairs where physios ask baseline questions, like identifying the ground, the day of the week, or the score, to ensure the player’s cognitive functions are intact. But before Craig could even utter his first diagnostic question, Ashutosh blurted out an entirely unexpected response that completely derailed the medical evaluation.

It was a tense moment for Ashutosh Sharma. I was out of the ground. He was hit on the helmet. Craig, our physio, went to check on him. He was just about to ask him, when Ashutosh said, ‘Yes bro. I am virgin,‘” Axar revealed with a laugh.

The bizarre, unsolicited declaration caught the veteran physio entirely off guard. Instead of a standard medical assessment, the interaction devolved into a fit of giggles.

Craig couldn’t ask anything after that. Both of them just laughed and the physio returned. He is an extremely funny man, he could do anything,” he added, highlighting the youngster’s unique ability to find humour even in painful or high-pressure situations.

Delhi Capitals face uphill battle after consecutive playoff misses

While Ashutosh’s antics provided some much-needed dressing room levity, the overall campaign for the Delhi Capitals has been far more sober. Under Axar’s leadership, DC failed to make the playoffs for the second consecutive time, finishing at a disappointing sixth position this season following a fifth-place finish in IPL 2025.

The team’s struggles were evident across both departments. While star batter KL Rahul anchored the top order, consistently crossing the 500-run milestone, his heavy run-scoring often lacked the aggressive strike rate required in the modern T20 format, ultimately yielding little value in the broader context of the tournament. The rest of the batting unit suffered from a lack of dynamic firepower, bogged down by too many one-dimensional players.

On the bowling front, DC lacked teeth. The absence of Australian speedster Mitchell Starc during the crucial first half of the competition severely weakened their powerplay attack. To make matters worse, premier spinner Kuldeep Yadav endured a rare, forgettable season, leaving the in-form Lungi Ngidi with too heavy a burden to carry alone. Following these back-to-back failures, rumors are swirling that the DC management is looking to overhaul the squad and restructure their leadership ahead of the next cycle.
