Abdullah Mason showed a completely different side of his game Saturday night, digging deep to overcome a brutal first half before blasting out Albert Bell in the final round to keep his WBO lightweight belt at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

The unbeaten champion, Mason, now 21-0 with 18 KOs, had to think on his feet against his fellow Ohio native before scoring a dramatic 12th round stoppage over Bell (28-1, 9 KOs) in front of a roaring hometown crowd.

Bell, a crafty 33 year old veteran from Toledo, completely frustrated Mason through the opening six rounds. His slick movement, slick timing, and pinpoint counterpunching kept the young champion from ever settling into a rhythm. Most ringside observers had the challenger well ahead at the midway mark.

Mason gradually forced his way back into the fight by hammering Bell’s body and turning up the heat. Instead of blindly chasing Bell around the ring, he cut off the canvas way more effectively and forced the challenger into a grueling pace that became impossible to sustain.

The momentum swung heavily in Mason’s favor as the late rounds ticked away. Bell’s legs vanished, his work rate plummeted, and the younger fighter’s heavier shots started landing with thudding regularity.

It all fell apart for Bell in the 12th.

Mason dropped Bell with a massive shot early in the round. The challenger beat the count, but the champion immediately swarmed him again, unleashing a vicious series of punches that produced a second knockdown. With Bell struggling on wobbly legs, the referee stepped in and waved it off.

The sudden ending sparked immediate debate because Bell had managed to scramble back to his feet. A few fans felt he deserved the chance to try and survive the final bell, while others thought the referee made a smart, compassionate call given the heavy punishment Bell was absorbing.

This was far from a flawless night for Mason, but it stands as the most important victory of his career. He proved he can adapt against a slick, defensive specialist when his initial game plan fails, rather than just relying on easy knockout power.

Bell leaves with his stock high despite taking the first loss of his professional career. Stepping in as a late replacement, he gave the hyped champion nightmares that nobody saw coming, proving he belongs at the world class level before Mason’s youth and relentless pressure broke him down.

The big finish capped a perfect night for the Mason family. Abdullah closed the show in style after his brothers, Abdurrahman and Ibrahim Mason, both picked up impressive wins earlier on the Cleveland card.
