Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe Philadelphia 76ers are seeking a general manager who will work in concert with others throughout the organization. Bob Myers, the former Golden State Warriors GM overseeing the search, made that priority clear Thursday.
"You need good people that are in harmony," Myers said at a news conference.
The 76ers dismissed Daryl Morey on Tuesday after six seasons in which the team posted a 270-212 regular season record and reached the playoffs five times but never advanced past the second round. Philadelphia was swept by the New York Knicks in this year's second round.
Myers said he hopes to complete the hire before the NBA Draft, which begins June 23, but will not rush the process.
"I'm a big believer in character and leadership," he said. "I'm looking for a person who embodies those things."
The incoming GM will inherit a roster that has pivoted to be built around Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe as the backcourt of the present and future, as opposed to Joel Embiid and Paul George, two high-priced veterans whose availability has been inconsistent. Embiid has dealt with recurring injuries. George served a 25-game suspension this season for violating the league's drug policy. Myers said roster depth will be a central question during the search. "Can this model work?" he said.
Harris confirmed the organization will support spending beyond the luxury tax threshold and reaffirmed coach Nick Nurse's standing.
"He's earned the right to be here," Harris said. "He's our coach moving forward."
Myers, who won four championships with Golden State, cautioned that building a title contender demands sustained effort.
"It takes a great level of uncomfortability to win a championship," he said. "There is no wave of a wand. This requires a ton of work."
