Derek McInnes sent Glasgow Rangers supporters into a frenzy on Sunday when he revealed that the club are hopeful of finalising a signing in the next 48 hours.

The Scottish boss, speaking after the 0-0 draw with West Ham United at Ibrox, claimed that the Gers are looking to bring in a new player early this week, whilst another is being targeted for the Scottish Premiership opener on Friday.

As of yet, there have not been any reports revealing the identity of the player who is seemingly closing in on a move to the Scottish giants this week.

So, who could it be? Here are five options...

1 Vaclav Cerny

Rangers are said to be exploring a move to bring Czechia forward Vaclav Cerny back to Glasgow in a deal that could be worth up to £8.5m from Turkish giants Besiktas.

The left-footed forward scored 18 goals and provided nine assists on loan at Ibrox in the 2024/25 campaign, before signing for Besiktas from Wolfsburg in the summer of 2025.

Now, the Light Blues are aiming to finally sign him on a permanent basis after they missed out on his signature under Russell Martin's leadership last year.

All of McInnes' current wide options are naturally right-footed players and Cerny would join to add a different dimension to the team's attack, whilst already being a proven Premiership performer from his previous spell at the club.

Given the recent nature of the links to the 28-year-old attacker, it would not be a huge surprise to see the ex-Ibrox hero walk through the door as this mystery signing.

2 Jens Hjerto-Dahl

The Gers have been in the race to sign Jens Hjerto-Dahl from Tromso throughout the summer window, but have yet to stump up the £8.5m fee that the Norwegian side want for his signature.

His return of seven goals and two assists in 14 appearances in the Eliteserien in the 2026 campaign so far, as well as four goals and four assists in the 2025 season, shows that he has the quality to be a game-changer from a midfield position for McInnes.

Despite being a central midfielder, Hjerto-Dahl has scored as many Eliteserien goals this year as Bodo/Glimt centre-forward Kasper Hogh, who is set to sign for Celtic for a fee in excess of £11m.

The Norway U21 international could be an excellent addition to the squad as a midfielder who can change games with goals and assists, but it still remains to be seen if they are willing to pay the money required to secure his services.

3 James Penrice

Rangers are still yet to replace Jayden Meghoma after the Jamaica international return to Brentford after his loan spell at Ibrox in the 2025/26 campaign.

Tuur Rommens is the only senior left-back option available to McInnes, which is why a deal for James Penrice, a reported target from AEK Athens, would make plenty of sense.

The Scottish defender is a proven Premiership talent, having created 14 'big chances' in 33 matches for Hearts in the 2024/25 campaign, and could provide Rommens with competition for his spot this season.

It may not be the most exciting piece of business for supporters to get excited about, as he would be a back-up left-back option, but it could be an important one all the same.

4 Stephy Mavididi

Going back down a slightly more exciting route, with all due respect to Penrice, another potential option is Leicester City forward Stephy Mavididi, who has been the subject of an approach from Rangers.

The Light Blues could take advantage of Leicester City's relegation to the third tier in England by swooping to sign the former Arsenal and Juventus youngster to bolster their wide options.

Mavididi only scored four goals in 45 matches in the 2025/26 campaign for the Foxes, but he was playing for a team that was struggling badly at the bottom of the table.

In the 2023/24 season, whilst playing for title-winners Leicester, the English winger racked up 12 goals, 11 'big chances' created, and six assists in the Championship.

He, therefore, has the potential to be an excellent addition to McInnes' wide options if he turns out to be the mystery signing brought in this week.

5 Ryan Alebiosu

Whilst Ross McCrorie has been signed from Bristol City to compete at right-back next season, Rangers may want another option in that position after James Tavernier left at the start of the month.

Blackburn Rovers right-back Ryan Alebiosu emerged as a target for the Scottish giants earlier this month, and could come in to compete with McCrorie for his spot in the side.

The Nigeria international is an attack-minded full-back who could offer even more creativity than the Scottish defender, who created eight 'big chances' for Bristol City in the Championship last term.

It could be Alebiosu, it could be Cerny, it could even be Penrice, or it could be a player who has not had any links to the club all summer and they have brilliantly kept it under wraps.

Either way, supporters may have a signing to look forward to welcoming to Ibrox in the coming hours ahead of the clash with Dundee United on Friday.
