It all felt so familiar.

Another team celebrating on the field at Yankee Stadium on a crisp October night. A choked-up Aaron Boone trying to explain away another playoff letdown. A silent clubhouse in which players, at least those not heading into the uncertainty of free agency, spoke about adding fuel to the fire for their offseason and making sure they come back next year to finish the job.

For Yankees fans, it is the never-ending nightmare they have not been able to wake up from, resulting in the annual calls for the heads of Boone and Brian Cashman.

“When you pour so much into it and it’s your livelihood, it’s hard to describe how awful of a feeling it is to go home again,” Boone said late Wednesday night.
