The Yankees are showing zero interest in available Mets star Francisco Lindor because they seem pretty comfortable with José Caballero plus No. 1 prospect George Lombard Jr. closing in on a call-up, never mind that they wouldn’t touch the $174 million owed through 2031 for Lindor. 

But the Yankees and Mets still could match up, as Luis Torrens, Francisco Alvarez and ex-Yankees Clay Holmes and Luke Weaver all would help.

The New York teams historically haven’t made many trades, but the Mets are in no position to be picky now, and the Yankees aren’t likely to give up the next Pete Crow-Armstrong. Trade deadlines are a Brian Cashman specialty and the best players he gave up as prospects might be relievers Mark Melancon and Tyler Clippard, a long way from the Fred McGriff, Doug Drabek and Jay Buhner days. 

Lombard isn’t going anywhere anyway, but the Yankees have a decent prospect stash. Ben Grable with his unique fastball has leaped into the top pitching group of Elmer Rodriguez, Carlos Lagrange and Ben Hess.
