The Yankees activated designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton from the 60-day IL, per a team announcement. He’s on the Wild Card roster against the Red Sox. To clear a 40-man spot for Stanton, the club designated right-hander Alexander Cornielle for assignment.

Cornielle made his MLB debut in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader against the Orioles. He allowed two earned runs over an inning of work. The righty allowed a solo homer and an RBI double, bringing the tying run to the plate. Cornielle then struck out Rece Hinds and Christian Franklin to secure the victory. It might not have been the result Cornielle envisioned for his first big-league outing, but he got to record the final out of a win, which is a cool moment.

The 25-year-old Cornielle had spent his entire pro career in the Brewers’ system heading into this year. The Yankees added him on a minor league deal over the winter. Cornielle posted a 3.39 ERA across 21 appearances between Single-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. He had a solid 24.1% strikeout rate, but a hefty 13% walk rate.

Cornielle will now hit the waiver wire. His four-pitch arsenal and 12.1% swinging-strike rate this year could intrigue another team, though the most likely result is sticking in New York’s organization. Cornielle has not been outrighted in his career and would have to accept an assignment to the minors.

Stanton rejoins the Yankees for the first time since late April. He went down with a calf strain a month into the season. The slugger tweaked that calf again, then injured his other calf during the recovery process. Stanton will provide right-handed pop off the bench against Boston. The Red Sox are starting lefty Payton Tolle in Game 1. They have several lefties in the bullpen, including Garrett Crochet, who is also making a long-awaited return.
