The San Diego Padres are heading toward this year's All-Star Game break with little momentum and plenty of questions about the future of their roster.

Entering play on Wednesday with a 45-46 mark, San Diego sat 14.0 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. 

The Padres are also 4.5 games out of the final NL wild-card spot, making their path to the postseason an uphill challenge.

Why the Padres should consider trading Mason Miller

With those numbers in mind, Jim Bowden, who was the senior vice president and general manager for the Cincinnati Reds and Washington Nationals for a combined 16 years, said on Wednesday that the Padres dealing away reliever Mason Miller could potentially "plug some holes, not just for this year, but for the future."

"Maybe it's time to move Mason Miller and try to plug some holes, not just for this year, but for the future."

Miller is considered one of the elite bullpen arms in all of Major League Baseball, striking out 69 in 37.2 innings while posting a 0.96 ERA. He is also under team control through the 2029 campaign.

The 27-year-old Miller was a part of a trade at the 2025 MLB trade deadline with the Athletics, where the Padres parted ways with four players, including Leo De Vries, who was considered the third-best prospect in all of baseball at the time of the deal.

San Diego paid handsomely to get Miller ... and he has certainly performed up to that price since coming to the Padres. But he is also arguably the team's best trade chip as well if president of baseball operations and general manager A.J. Preller wants to try to rebuild a farm system that has been completely stripped in recent seasons thanks to trades, beginning the season at the bottom of MLB's farm rankings.

Trading Miller would likely replenish some of those farm system needs and perhaps give the Padres some talent that would be ready or close to ready to contribute at the MLB level. However, an electric arm like Miller's is a rare thing, and the Padres giving it away would be a change in direction for a franchise (and fan base) that has long believed it could compete for a World Series appearance.

It would also be a noticeable downgrade for a franchise that has prided itself on landing big names at the MLB trade deadline to try to win. Miller has posted 23 saves this season, and only one other active Padre pitcher (Adrian Morejon) has logged a save this season (he has just one). Someone stepping into the closer role would be a step down from Miller, although the Padres could certainly figure out a closer-by-committee Band-Aid if needed.

Trading Miller could potentially help the Padres in the future, but there is never a guarantee with prospects. However, for a team that is aging and loaded down with big contracts, a reboot using Miller may be necessary to get back to being considered a true contender.
