Leeds United's 1-1 draw with Brentford at Elland Road in the Premier League on Sunday explained why they want to bolster their frontline before Tuesday's deadline.

The Whites grabbed an equaliser through Dominic Calvert-Lewin after Kevin Schade's opening goal, but they failed to push on and score the winner in the closing stages.

They had several presentable counter-attacking opportunities and their players made the wrong decision, taking a shot when they should have crossed or vice versa, and did not make the most of those chances.

Daniel Farke is looking to add more attacking quality to the group before the end of the window, and one player who should be replaced as a regular starter is Brenden Aaronson.

You can rarely, if ever, fault the energy and work rate that the USA international provides wherever he is selected to play on the pitch, but his lack of genuine quality in front of goal is an issue.

Despite starting both games, Aaronson did not score a goal or create a single chance for his teammates against Nottingham Forest or Brentford in the first two matches of the Premier League campaign.

In fact, the 25-year-old forward has not scored a goal in the league since his two goals against Newcastle United at St. James' Park in a 4-3 defeat at the start of January.

He has recorded zero goals and two assists in 19 appearances in the Premier League since that brace against the Magpies, which speaks to his lack of consistency and quality at the top end of the pitch.

The Whites, therefore, need to find a winger who can offer more quality in front of goal than the American attacker, who does not look set to deliver goals and creativity on a regular basis this season.

Winger's desire to sign for Leeds is bad news for Aaronson

Because of Aaronson's struggles in the final third, the latest update on the club's pursuit of a new forward could come as bad news to the playmaker.

According to LeedsLive, the 49ers remain interested in a deal to sign Mykhailo Mudryk for Leeds United from Chelsea before Tuesday's transfer deadline.

The report claims that the player wants to make the move to Elland Road before the end of the window, as his preference is to sign for the Whites, and that he does not want to join Strasbourg on loan.

It adds that a deal will be difficult to do, and that a move is unlikely at this time, but they remain in the race for his signature and have not given up hope of bringing him to West Yorkshire.

The news that Mudryk's preference is to sign for Leeds before the window closes should come as bad news for Aaronson, because it could be the end of his time as a regular starter.

Although the Ukraine international has not played a competitive match since 2024, due to a doping suspension that has since been lifted after an appeal, he showed promising signs when he last played for Chelsea.

The electric forward racked up six goal contributions in four appearances in the Conference League for the Blues in the first half of the 2024/25 campaign.

Prior to that, Mudryk scored seven goals and provided two assists in 41 appearances in all competitions for the London giants in the 2023/24 campaign, including a return of five goals in 18 starts in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Aaronson has scored five goals in 75 appearances in the Premier League in his career at Leeds, including four goals in 32 starts since the start of last season.

The Ukraine international, who was described as a "dribbling monster" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has the potential to offer a greater threat than the USA international in the final third if he can get back to the level that he showed before his ban.

Aaronson should be concerned by the club's interest in a deal for the Chelsea attacker because the 25-year-old could take his position in the side as a left or right-sided winger, given his potential to offer more quality to the team.

That could lead to the former RB Salzburg star struggling for starts and minutes on the pitch in the Premier League for the rest of this season.
