The White Sox announced that left-hander Noah Schultz has been recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. Right-hander José Urquidy has been designated for assignment as the corresponding roster move.

Urquidy, 31, was acquired from the Pirates in July after he had been designated for assignment by Pittsburgh. The Sox deployed him mostly as a long reliever, though he also made one start. Over six total appearances, he logged 22 2/3 innings, allowing 4.37 earned runs per nine. His 5.3% walk rate was good but his 15.8% strikeout rate and 37% ground ball rate were both subpar.

Those are pretty reasonable numbers for a club’s swingman/long reliever but the Sox haven’t needed him much. He has only made two appearances this month and the last was back on September 8. It seems the club has decided to give his spot to Schultz instead.

Schultz himself hasn’t pitched in the minors since September 6 but he has the potential for a bit more upside. He has far less big league experience that Urquidy, with just 65 1/3 big league innings under his belt and a 6.06 ERA in those. But in the minors this year, he has a 2.01 ERA, 26.3% strikeout rate and 52.8% ground ball rate.

With the trade deadline having passed, Urquidy will now have to be placed on waivers. He wouldn’t be eligible for the postseason for any claiming club but perhaps might get scooped up by a team in need of veteran innings to get through the regular season. Tommy John surgery wiped out most of 2024 and 2025 for Urquidy but he has a 3.48 ERA in 95 2/3 Triple-A innings this year. His time in the big leagues with the Pirates was a struggle but in a tiny sample. As mentioned, his outings with the White Sox were serviceable enough for a long relief guy.
