Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayDana White’s one-champion vision could eventually force the reigning titleholder to choose between sanctioning-body belts and Zuffa Boxing’s new model
Shakur Stevenson’s move to Zuffa Boxing has sparked new questions about the future of his WBO junior welterweight title. Dana White has repeatedly called for a one-champion system, creating uncertainty over whether Stevenson will eventually continue defending the belt or compete solely under Zuffa Boxing’s structure.
Dana White has repeatedly criticized boxing’s current championship structure and has said he wants Zuffa Boxing to operate with a single champion in each weight class rather than multiple sanctioning body titleholders. If the promotion follows through with that vision, Stevenson could eventually find himself choosing between defending the WBO belt and competing exclusively within Zuffa’s system.
At the moment, there is no indication that Stevenson will immediately vacate his title. However, if Zuffa discourages its fighters from paying sanctioning fees or pursuing belts outside the company, the WBO championship could become secondary to the promotion’s long-term plans.
That would also narrow Stevenson’s list of potential opponents.
Many of the biggest names at 140 pounds remain aligned with established promoters. If Zuffa prioritizes in-house matchmaking, Stevenson may have fewer elite options unless the company continues signing top contenders and world champions from rival promotional outfits.
Zuffa Boxing will need to continue adding established contenders and world champions if it intends to keep its top fighters facing elite opposition. At present, many of the leading names at 140 pounds remain under contract with other promotional companies.
The timing of Stevenson’s signing is also notable. Zuffa Boxing has been steadily expanding its roster, and landing an unbeaten Olympic silver medalist and reigning world champion gives the promotion another recognizable name as it attempts to establish itself in the sport.
For Stevenson, the move offers the possibility of becoming one of the faces of a new promotional model. Whether that path includes defending his WBO title or eventually leaving it behind in favor of Zuffa’s proposed one-belt system remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the signing.
