Anthony Elanga has given Newcastle United an early lead against Liverpool following a rapid tactical breakdown.

The goal arrived from an electric counter-attack that unfolded straight out of a Liverpool offensive phase.

In a flash, a frantic defensive clearance inside Newcastle’s penalty area transformed into a blistering break.

Forward William Osula seized on clearance, driving forward with power into open space before sliding a precise through-ball into the path of Elanga.

The Swedish international made a dashing run in from the right flank, using his raw recovery speed to leave Liverpool full-back Milos Kerkez trailing behind in his wake.

After taking a light touch inside the penalty box, Elanga produced a precise right-footed finish past Alisson, tucking the ball cleanly into the bottom corner of the net to stun the home crowd.

Elanga’s speed will be a problem for Kerkez

Elanga’s blistering movement for the opening goal highlighted a massive tactical mismatch that Liverpool will need to adjust to quickly.

The Swedish winger’s sheer acceleration and direct running off the ball exposed Milos Kerkez, who found himself out of position while trying to support Liverpool’s forward line during the initial attack.

If Kerkez continues to push high up the pitch to provide width for the Reds, Newcastle will routinely look to exploit the space left behind on the counter-attack.

With Osula and Elanga displaying immediate chemistry in transition, Kerkez faces a difficult task balancing his attacking duties with the defensive discipline required to contain Elanga’s world-class pace throughout the remainder of the match.
