I've been meaning to create a video for a long time showing how to use tooth floss to thread string through a shared grommet. All the credit goes to BC member and very skillful stringer @PeteLSD for teaching me this. >applause<

There are many approaches to threading a cross string through a shared hole that have been shown by fellow BC members and illustrated in video by @kwun: http://www.badmintoncentral.com/forums/showthread.php/125872-VIDEO-conquering-the-shared-hole

  1. Cutting the tip of the string to have a pointed end. Use needle nose pliers to push the string through the shared grommet.
  2. Using an Awl
  3. Using a String Mover

and you can finally add:
... 4. Using Tooth Floss

Directions:
1) Get at least 6 inches of tooth floss (waxed or non waxed).
2) Take one end and tie a knot to the other such that a loop is created like so:
[ ]---
3) Thread the loose end through the shared grommet until the loop is now on both sides of the grommet
4) Put your string into the loop.
5) Pull the loose end of the floss such that it pulls the loop and the string inside through the shared grommet!
6) Done!

Below is a video illustrating this:

thanks for the vid - handy!

Thats so cool. I gotta try it next time!

I just tried it today, one of the best DIY free stringing tools, much easier and safer than other methods,
thanks for the clip and PeteLSD for the idea.

I used this method in some of my previous stringing videos but it would be hard to notice (who watches a whole stringing video any ways ...especially that of a slow stringer :p). I'm glad you all enjoy this HowTo video.

Great post many thanks.

I am a noob stringer on my first attempt and so far broke 4 sets of strings trying to get through shared grommets (they really needed replacing but I don't have any yet but that's another story!), using this technique enabled me to finish the job, highly recommended!

Shared holes aren't that hard to navigate, it's the blocked holes that I was hoping to see this technique be used. I tried a bread tie wire but had no luck. To me, there's a string already in the grommet. Then you are trying to pull a loop of string holding the cross string at a V connection which means you're doubling the width of the string you're trying to pull through, in effect 3 strings through a blocked hole. The video shows the string move through the hole as easily as if you used your fingers or pliers. I must be missing something.

I had one racket with a blocked hole up at the second to top cross that I spent 20 minutes trying to get the string through. Finally gave up and skipped that cross a la Tai Tzu-ying to finsh the racket. (mine) The next time I skipped the top and bottom crosses and the 2 outside mains for a more open pattern that plays just as well and avoids the blocked hole altogether.

Maybe there is a misunderstanding. The 12 year old video was for demonstration purposes of a method of getting the string through a shared grommet if you don't want to use an awl (and the wired loop tool was not discovered until 2025).

So is your problem with a shared hole that's also blocked?
I know after experience i always "look ahead" to see where grommets could potentially be blocked during stringing. Most of the time scrap string or the metal hook can move the main string in order to feed the cross..

Where i might do things a little different is before i tension the last mains, i preweave the first 4 crosses so that i can control whether the string is above or below the main string as well as the longer run of string for the skip. Then i tension the mains and tie off.

For the top crosses (especially new grommets and frames) i always due the skip the 2nd from top cross to do the top most and come back on the 2nd last cross. it is common that i block my own grommet, but that's when i just put in scrap thin string) to move the string just enough to feed the cross through.

Hope this helps
