Victor Wembanyama is reportedly open to signing a contract extension with the San Antonio Spurs for less than the maximum value available, according to Jake Fischer.

The French star is eligible for a rookie scale extension starting at 25 percent of the salary cap, which could rise to 30 percent if he earns All-NBA honors or wins Defensive Player of the Year next season.

Instead of seeking the biggest possible deal, Wembanyama is reportedly considering taking less to give the Spurs greater financial flexibility under the NBA’s new salary cap rules.

That would make it easier for San Antonio to stay below the restrictive second apron while preparing future extensions for Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper.

“Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes🖤” wrote Wembanyama on Twitter on Friday.

Wembanyama could sign a five-year extension worth up to $252 million, with the total value exceeding $300 million if he qualifies for the Rose Rule max.

NBA superstars have rarely accepted significant pay cuts, but the league’s 2023 collective bargaining agreement introduced the punitive second apron, making roster building far more restrictive for teams that exceed it.
