Usman Nurmagomedov defends UFC Shanghai incident after Umar Nurmagomedov was knocked out

Usman Nurmagomedov is taking exception to the pushback he’s gotten in the aftermath of UFC Shanghai.

Nurmagomedov was in his brother Umar’s corner this past Saturday for the big bantamweight showdown against Song Yadong. Umar was a sizable betting favorite entering the weekend, but it was the home countryman who got the job done in stunning fashion. Yadong scored the second-round knockout finish, and it’s the first time Umar has ever been slept in a pro MMA bout.

While Yadong’s victory has made the highlight reel, Nurmagomedov found himself at the center of controversy after he immediately hopped inside the Octagon to check on his brother. Yadong almost ran into Nurmagomedov, and some wondered if the PFL Lightweight Champion thought about throwing an elbow.

In the wake of negativity, Nurmagomedov took to his Instagram page to put his detractors on blast for believing he considered giving Yadong a cheap shot.

“Only what is destined for us will befall us. In any situation, Alhamdulillah People make such a big deal out of this. They’d be better off calming down. There are things far worse; you don’t need to think too hard. Just look at what’s happening in the world. And as for the claim that I supposedly wanted to hit his opponent. If I had wanted to, I would have hit him.

“You mean-spirited, petty, and envious people. Your problem is that you’ve never had, and never will have, an understanding of or love for family. If you don’t know what it means for a brother to be a brother, then it’s not me you should feel sorry for—it’s yourselves.”

UFC Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier has been heavily criticized by fans for sticking up for Nurmagomedov despite getting inside the cage when he shouldn’t have. Some felt Nurmagomedov’s actions took some of the spotlight away from “The Kung Fu Kid,” but he isn’t worried about it as he feels a bantamweight title shot is in order.
