Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is back stateside in the fight capitol of the world, Las Vegas, Nevada, to stage UFC Vegas 108 from inside its private Apex venue, featuring a re-worked Flyweight bout between Tatsuro Taira vs. Hyun Sung Park after top-ranked contender, Amir Albazi, had to withdraw for medical reasons. In the co-main event, Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki meet up in an fun Lightweight showdown.

What’s Hot:

Taira was seemingly one more win away from a UFC title shot after racking up six straight wins inside the Octagon before running into Brandon Royval, who took it all away from him via split decision back in Oct. 2024. Now, the 25-year-old Japanese star will attempt to right his ship in an all-important headlining bout against Park. Initially slated to face the aforementioned Albazi, Taira would have had the opportunity to vault right back into the thick of the title hunt with a victory. Nevertheless, a win is a win, and he still has to try and obtain it by not taking his opponent lightly.

Undefeated (10-0), Park has a golden opportunity in front of him to crash the Top 10. After winning Road to UFC Season 1, Park has racked up three straight wins inside the Octagon, all while extending his consecutive finish streak to nine (four under UFC’s banner). He is as talented as they come; therefore, counting him out against Taira would be a huge mistake because he has shown he has all of the tools to get the job done anywhere the fight goes. Sure, Taira has proven himself as one of the best in the world, but Park isn’t going to lay down, especially when the stakes are highest and lights the brightest.

What’s Not:

Karol Rosa will face Nora Cornolle in a women’s 135-pound matchup, and I am still baffled as to why this bout received a main card slot. Neither of them are close to a title shot, Rosa is ranked No. 10, while Cornolle is sitting at No. 12. Rosa is 1-2 in her last three fights, while Cornolle is 3-1 so far in her UFC career. I can think of a couple of undercard bouts that could have replaced this one, but UFC Vegas 108 is what it is.

Original Card Vs. Actual Card:

 Barez v Lima

A Flyweight bout between Felipe Bunes vs. Andre Lima was scheduled for this event before Lima withdrew from the fight for unknown reasons and was ultimately replaced by Rafael Estevam, who is undefeated (13-0), which includes being perfect (2-0) under UFC’s banner. As for Bunes, he secured his first win inside the Octagon, submitting Joe Johnson via armbar at the beginning of the year. Meanwhile, Estevam missed weight and will fork over 25 percent of his fight purse to his opponent.

A Middleweight bout between Torrez Finney and former LFA Middleweight champion, Azamat Bekoev, was also scheduled for this event before Finney withdrew from the fight for unknown reasons. He was replaced by promotional newcomer, Yousri Belgaroui, before he, too, was forced out of the matchup because visa issues. They will now fight at UFC Vancouver in October.

In addition, a Featherweight fight between Austin Bashi vs. Francis Marshall was scratched after “Fire” Marshall” withdrew. Filling in for him will be John Yannis, who is a former Fury FC Featherweight champion.

Injuries:

No injuries reported for this event, however, as mentioned earlier, Albazi was pulled from his headlining duties against Taira as a result of a medical issue that was discovered during fight week and was replaced by Park in the headliner.

New Blood:

Yannis got the call up to the big show a few days before fight night to fill in for Marshall. Fury FC’s former 145-pound champion has a professional record of 9-3 and is currently riding a three-fight win streak with three knockouts in those victories. The entertaining pugilist has a chance to make a big impression right away to show he has “The Juice” to hang with UFC’s big boys. In Bashi, he faces a man who is out to secure his first win inside the Octagon after coming up short in his debut bout against Christian Rodriguez, snapping his 13-fight unbeaten streak.

How The ‘Prelims’ Look:

After starting off his career at 9-0, Rinya Nakamura tasted defeat for the first time in his last outing against Muin Gafurov. Now, the Japanese-born fighter is out to get back on track when he battles Nathan Fletcher, who is coming off a tough split decision defeat at the hands of Caolan Loughran four months ago.

Both Nick Klein and Andrey Pulyaev came up short in their respective UFC debuts coming out of Contender Series, and now they are desperately trying to avoid going down 0-2 to start their careers. But, that is exactly what is going to happen to one man as they collide in a Middleweight showdown.

After losing two straight, Piera Rodriguez finally snapped her funk, defeating Josefine Lindgren Knutsson in Dec. 2024. She’s been out for a minute, so it will be interesting to see if she can keep her momentum going against Ketlen Souza, the jiu-jitsu specialist who is trying to erase the stink and bitterness of coming up short on the judges scored cards against Angela Hill via split decision.

Right when Rodolfo Vieira was starting to pick up some steam with two straight wins, he ran into Andre Petroski, who snapped his win streak earlier this year. His opponent, Tresean Gore, was also enjoying a two-fight win streak before he ran into Marco Tulio’s right hand at UFC 314 (see it here), sending him back to the drawing board. Now, one man will get back in the win column, while the other will have two straight defeats. And if it’s Gore, there is no telling what the future will hold for him after missing weight.

Who Needs A Win Badly:

 Taira v Park Weigh-In

Neil Magny is one of the longest-tenured UFC fighters, competing for the promotion for more than 12 years now with 34 fights under his belt. While he has seen some decent wins come his way, over the last couple of years he has really struggled, losing four of his last six, which includes his current two-fight losing streak (knockout losses to Carlos Prates and Michael Morales). He is in danger of losing his third in a row for the first time in his lengthy career as he battles Elizeu Zaleski, who could use a win himself after losing two of his last three. Still, Magny needs a win in the worst way or he could be getting the dreaded pink slip.

 Taira v Park Weigh-In

Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki meet up in an intriguing Lightweight co-main event bout. Duncan is off to a fine 4-1 start under UFC’s banner, with his lone blemish coming at the hands of Manuel Torres in Feb. 2024. Since then, he has racked up two straight submission wins and is out to keep it going against Rebecki, who is also 4-1 inside the Octagon. He was last seen escaping Las Vegas with a split decision win over Myktybek Orolbai at UFC 308.

Elves Brener kicked off his UFC run with three straight wins, but things have taken a turn for the worse over his last two outings, losing two straight fights in 2024. This will be his first taste of action in 2025 as he battles Esteban Ribovics, who is coming off a tough split decision defeat to Nasrat Haqparast, which snapped his three-fight win streak.

 Taira v Park Weigh-In

Two up-and-coming Featherweights will collide to see who keeps their ascension going, as Kevin Vallejos vs. Danny Silva meet up in what should be a high-paced affair. Vallejos is currently on a four-fight win streak and impressed in his UFC debut knocking out Seung Woo Choi (highlights). As for Silva, he is also on a four-fight win streak and kicked off his UFC career with back-to-back split decision wins over Joshua Culibao and Lucas Almeida.

Enjoy the fights!
