Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is just one day away from the upcoming UFC Vegas 108 mixed martial arts (MMA) event, which is set to go down tomorrow night (Sat., Aug. 2, 2025) on ESPN and ESPN+ from inside APEX in Las Vegas, Nevada. UFC Vegas 108 features a flyweight main event between 125-pound standouts Tatsuro Taira and Hyun Sung Park, a five-round showdown with possible title implications for late 2025 and beyond.

Before we dive into the main and co-main events, which include the lightweight collision between Chris Duncan and Mateusz Rebecki, check out Andrew Richardson’s “X-Factor” breakdown for the rest of the UFC Vegas 108 main card by clicking here. Tatsuro Taira spent most of his UFC Vegas 108 fight camp preparing for Amir Albazi, currently ranked No. 4 at 125 pounds, right up until “The Prince” withdrew from the card and left Taira holding the bag. Matchmakers were able to poach Hyun Sung Park from UFC Vegas 109 and send Steve Erceg on to another assignment, so it’s not like “Peace of Mind” is jumping off the coach and battling a Top 10 contender.

That said, the undefeated “Road to UFC” standout was training for three rounds of war and this stylistic matchup could reasonably go all 25 minutes, pushing the unbeaten Korean to his absolute limit. At the same time, flyweights rarely gas and Park is fighting in his competitive prime at 29 years old, so I’m not expecting any dramatic drop off in performance.

“Obviously, the opponent changed on short notice, last-minute, but I’ve been preparing very well together with my team,” Taira said at the UFC Vegas 108 media day. “My team has been very supportive. I’ve been working on my strength to get stronger and get better. I train with a lot of fighters from my team, so I was actually prepared to fight anyone. I’m ready for this fight. I would say this will be the first time Park will be fighting against a fighter at my level. Likely in the first round, he would understand that what he said was a mistake.”

Taira is looking to rebound from his first career loss, a split decision defeat opposite longtime contender, Brandon Royval. It’s not unreasonable to suggest Taira’s lack of aggression may have cost him the lead on the judges’ scorecards but it sounds like the Okinawan is ready to put the past behind him.

“The last fight against Royval, five-minute, five-round tough fight, definitely made me realize I need to get better conditioning and, of course, the striking side as well,” Taira said. “So, I think I’m back now, definitely as a better fighter. Conditioning and striking for sure, but not just that. I learned a lot from that fight in gaining experience as well. Now I’m fighting Hyun Sung Park, who is a younger opponent. Now it’s my turn to show the experience and what UFC fighters are.”

If there is one knock against Park, it’s his strength of schedule. It’s easy to stay undefeated when you don’t have to fight anyone currently ranked in the Top 15 and now “Peace of Mind” will jump right into the deep end against a formidable grappler and one of the flyweight division’s most dangerous young prospects.

“Since this was such a short-notice fight, actually there was no camp, no preparation [for Taira],” Park said at the UFC Vegas 108 media day. “So, I’m just gonna fight with my regular skills. He’s a good MMA fighter, but not too great, so I think I’ll be able to beat him. Tatsuro is a tricky fighter, so this makes me really excited and I’m ready for it. I will smash Taira Tatsuro. I will break him. Of course I’m cutting a lot of weight in a short period of time, but I don’t see that as very difficult. I just want to focus on my weight cut right now, and then just be able to win this week.”

I expect this to be a close fight that ultimately favors the grappling of Taira.

Prediction: Taira def. Park by unanimous decision

155 lbs.: Chris Duncan vs. Mateusz Rebecki

Chris “The Problem” Duncan
Record: 13-2 | Age: 32 | Betting line: +170
Wins: 7 KO/TKO, 3 SUB, 3 DEC | Losses: 1 KO/TKO, 1 SUB, 0 DEC
Height: 5’10“ | Reach: 71” | Stance: Orthodox
Significant Strikes Landed Per Minute: 4.20 | Striking accuracy: 45%
Strikes Absorbed Per Minute: 3.63 | Striking Defense: 47%
Takedown Average: 4.10 (43% accuracy) | Takedown Defense: 37%
Current Ranking: Unranked | Last fight: Submission win over Jordan Vucenic

Mateusz “Chinczyk” Rebecki
Record: 20-2 | Age: 32 | Betting line: -205
Wins: 9 KO/TKO, 7 SUB, 4 DEC | Losses: 2 KO/TKO, 0 SUB, 0 DEC
Height: 5’7“ | Reach: 66” | Stance: Southpaw
Significant Strikes Landed Per Minute: 4.70 | Striking accuracy: 48%
Strikes Absorbed Per Minute: 4.13 | Striking Defense: 54%
Takedown Average: 3.84 (75% accuracy) | Takedown Defense: 45%
Current Ranking: Unranked | Last fight: Split decision win over Myktybek Orolbai

Chris Duncan and Mateusz Rebecki have a lot in common. Both combatants were victorious on Dana White’s “Contender Series” back in Aug. 2022 and since graduating the APEX proving ground, have gone on to compile identical 4-1 records — and both were finished in their respective losses. On top of that, “The Problem” and “Chinczyk” also train together at American Top Team (ATT) in Florida.

“It’s just unfortunate we train under the same gym, but I’m just very fortunate American Top Team was so professional in regard to keeping us separate in our training and stuff like that,” Duncan said at the UFC Vegas 108 media day. “It is what it is. I’m going to make his wish [to fight me] come true. I think he’s a very respectful opponent. He was super respectful to me in the gym. We’re just going to go out there and clash and I’m going to show him I’m the better fighter.”

“We all know he comes forward,” Duncan continued. “He’s a brawler. I think he’s going to try to wrestle me a little bit, to be honest. It takes no genius to know he’s going to come forward with some heat, so have to make sure to not get caught, getting caught in stupid places. I’m looking forward to it. He’s a great opponent for me.”

Rebecki is a short, stocky lightweight who would probably be competing at 145 pounds if he wasn’t so damn thick. Duncan will have a three-inch advantage in height and more importantly, a five-inch advantage in reach. Whether or not he can actually use them may depend on the success of Rebecki’s offensive wrestling, which averages nearly four takedowns per fight — also similar to Duncan.

“I’m really happy because I’ve been waiting 10 months and I would like to kick some ass,” Rębecki told UFC.com. “[Duncan is a ] tough guy. A lot of powerful kicks, good wrestling. On the ground, only [guillotine]. I think I can use the ground for me. It can be a better part for me than Chris Duncan. It’s difficult because it’s my teammate and I know everything that he does, but still, he has weaknesses, and I would like to use this.”

“[Expect] fireworks,” Rębecki continued. “Everything we can do. Submission, knockout each other, wrestling. We are guys who have everything and can show a really good show. We are in the co-main event because the UFC believes in us. [A win would] change my life. Probably Top 15, more money, sponsors. I will be a popular guy. I think it will be really good fun after.”

Duncan is the betting underdog here but he was also the betting underdog in his last two fights and won both of those by way of submission. The real question here is how long he can play matador because Rebecki is going to be barreling in at full speed for as long as his conditioning allows him to do so. “Chinczyk” by early stoppage feels like the easy pick but his last two fights featured some pretty ugly offense so I’m siding with Duncan who continues to defy the odds — which means his performances should no longer be attributed to luck.

Prediction: Duncan def. Rebecki by submission
