Meanwhile, Tatsuro Taira (18-2 MMA) was last seen in action this past December, where he earned a second-round TKO victory over former division champion Brandon Moreno. The Japanese standout suffered his lone career defeat 3 fights ago when he suffered a split decision loss to Brandon Royval.

Round one of the UFC 328 co-main event begins and Tatsuro Taira throws out a jab and then lands a low kick. Another jab from the Japanese standout. He lands a low kick and then charges in and scores a big takedown. He immediately moves to full mount and has four minutes to work. Joshua Van scrambles back to half guard. Taira moves to side control. Van looks to explode but gives up his neck. He breaks free from the choke and gets back to his feet. The champ with three good punches. Taira answers with a nice jab. He connects with another. Joshua Van with a crisp jab. Tatsuro Taira shoots in and scores another big takedown. One minute remains in the opening round. Van scrambles to his feet but Taira still has him pressed against the cage. A nice knee from the challenger and then another big takedown. He moves directly into full mount. A big elbow from Taira. The champ scrambles back up. A nice standing elbow from Taira to close out round one.

Round two of the UFC 328 co-main event begins and Joshua Van comes forward quickly. Tatsuro Taira feints with a takedown. He leaps in with a 1-2 and then a nice jab. He dives on a single leg takedown attempt. Van stays on his feet but is pressed against the cage. A nice knee to the body from the challenger. Now a right hand. Another knee to the body from Taira. The champ answers with a 1-2. A big right from Van connects. Taira answers with a left hook. He shoots in for a takedown and uses a trip to secure the shot. Taira moves to full mount. Joshua Van scrambles back to full guard position. Tatsuro Taira moves back to full mount. Van gets back to half guard. Taira with some body shots. A big right hand from Van floors Taira. The champ leaps on him with punches but the challenger survives to see the horn.

Round three of the UFC 328 co-headliner begins and Joshua Van charges out with a combination. He lands a stiff jab. Tatsuro Taira answers with a jab of his own. A nice combination from the champ. A big uppercut and then a left hook from Van. He lands a good jab. A big knee and then a flurry of shots from Van. Taira’s face is a mess. Another good jab from the champ. He’s landing at will. A big right hand over the top. Tatsuro Taira is in trouble. A jab sends Taira down. Van leaps on him and begins unloading shot. He takes Taira’s back and locks in a choke. Tatsuro escapes and then explodes to his feet. He lands a pair of jabs. Van answers with a hard jab of his own. Taira is a bloody mess. He lands a jab. Now a 1-2. He shoots in for a takedown. Amazing heart being shown by the challenger. He drags Van down but only for a second. A big takedown now from Taira. The champ scrambles back to his feet. Taira lands a left hook. The horn sounds the end round three.

Round four of the UFC 328 co-main event begins and Tatsuro Taira lands a jab and then a low kick. He lands a nice uppercut and then shoots in and presses Joshua Van against the cage. He picks up the champ and throws him down to the canvas. Taira is working from full guard to start but quickly advances to full mount. He works the body of Van with some punches. He lands a pair of solid right hands. The crowd is booing but this is great stuff from the Japanese standout. Van explodes but winds up in a triangle choke. He escapes and gets back to his feet. Joshua Van with four punches that all connect. Both men connect with jabs. Tatsuro Taira with a low kick and then one to the body. He dives in for a takedown but Van stuffs the attempt. Taira has the champ pressed against the cage now. Van breaks free and lands a jab before the horn sounds to end round four.

The fifth and final round begins and Joshua Van lands a pair of solid jabs to start. Tatsuro Taira is changing levels. The challenger connects with a good low kick. Taira with a right hand. He shoots in but cannot secure a takedown. A nice 1-2 from Van. He goes to the body and then lands another jab. Another big combination and Taira goes down. The referee steps in and stops the fight.
