Trade market gets thinner with Giants' Casey Schmitt injury

The San Francisco Giants have suffered a blow with utility player Casey Schmitt landing on the injured list due to a torn meniscus in his left knee. He's expected to miss the rest of the season.

In a corresponding move, they have called up infielder Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento.

The injury to Schmitt occurred on Monday in the bottom of the second inning against the Milwaukee Brewers, when the 27-year-old put the brakes on after attempting to round first base on a single. Schmitt "struggled to move," and was forced to exit the game.

It's been a series of unfortunate mishaps with the upcoming Aug. 3 trade deadline having several compelling trade chips land on the shelf, such as Shea Langeliers, Spencer Steer and Jake Bauers.

Casey Schmitt joins list of compelling trade candidates landing on the shelf

Schmitt now joins the list of several prominent trade candidates landing on the injury list, which has contributed to a narrow trade market. Prior to the injury, Schmitt drew a significant amount of interest from contending teams such as the Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies

The Mariners' need for a right-handed bat continues to be an uphill battle with the market taking another hit.

Schmitt was putting up one of the best seasons of his career, but it has now turned into heartbreaking news for Giants fans. With Matt Chapman already on the injury list with an abdominal strain, it leaves the Giants in a tough spot.

Schmitt was having a breakout season with the Giants, logging career-highs in home runs (21), stolen bases (nine) and RBI (55) with a .271 batting average. He was arguably the Giants' strongest offensive contributor.

The #SFGiants made the following roster moves today:

• IF Osleivis Basabe (#39) selected from Triple-A Sacramento.
• IF Casey Schmitt placed on the 10-day Injured List with a left knee meniscus tear.
