Former Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reportedly emerged as a potential replacement for Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur following the club’s disastrous start to the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Spurs invested heavily during the summer in an attempt to push away from last season’s relegation battle, but the results have gone in the opposite direction.

Five league matches have produced just two points, leaving De Zerbi under significant pressure despite the scale of the rebuild undertaken in north London.

SoccerNews reports Tottenham are considering Arne Slot

According to SoccerNews, as relayed by GOAL, Tottenham have placed Slot on their radar as uncertainty grows around De Zerbi’s position.

Slot is currently available after leaving Liverpool and is believed to favour another club job.

The Dutchman also turned down the opportunity to become Netherlands manager earlier this summer because he wanted to continue his career in club football.

Tottenham’s poor start is especially concerning given their enormous summer investment.

The club spent more than £300million, bringing in players including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Savinho. Tonali alone cost an initial £92.5m, while Savinho arrived from Manchester City in a deal reported at £75m plus add-ons.

Summer spending leaves De Zerbi with little margin for error

The pressure on De Zerbi is understandable because Tottenham were expected to improve significantly after such aggressive recruitment.

Instead, Spurs have taken only two points from five league games and suffered a 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa immediately before the international break.

De Zerbi admitted afterwards that the result was difficult to explain, with his team again showing periods of promise before collapsing defensively.

Slot would certainly be an intriguing option. He already understands the Premier League and won the title with Liverpool in 2024/25, meaning Tottenham would be appointing a manager with recent experience of succeeding at the highest domestic level.

However, Spurs have not dismissed De Zerbi, and reported interest in Slot should not be treated as evidence that a change has already been decided.

The Italian’s next run of matches could therefore be crucial in determining whether Tottenham continue backing their expensive rebuild or decide a new coach is needed to rescue the season.
