Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayWhether you’re a fan of running marathons or prefer to train for a 10K, many of us will know the feeling of wanting to improve on our previous race time. Tigist Assefa showed us all that it can be done yesterday in Berlin – and spectacularly so.
The 28-year-old from Ethiopia achieved an incredible feat, running the Berlin Marathon in 2:15:37. Not only was that a new course record (by 3 minutes), but also the third fastest women’s marathon ever. It was also a whopping 20 minute improvement to her personal best. Oh, and yes – this was only her second marathon ever.
As much as that’s motivated us to get our carbon plate running shoes on and have another go at that marathon training plan, it cannot be ignored that she was of course already an incredible runner. She is an Olympian, and has represented Ethiopia in both the 800m and 400m races.
But while we might not be first over the finish line in our next race, we can definitely all find inspiration from her success. She says that the huge improvement to her PB is due to fantastic preparation. Think good nutrition, proper run recovery and some serious training. And that’s something we can all do, Olympian or not.
Of course, Tigist wasn’t the only outstanding outcome from yesterday’s race. Eliud Kipchoge took 30 seconds off (his own) previous men’s marathon record. He ran the 26.2 miles in just over 2 hours. And our very own Fitness Editor, Tina, made it all the way to medal despite a recent ankle injury scuppering her training plan. “It feels like some kind of miracle!” she said. “I took it slow and steady. The city is stunning. What an experience. And a huge thank you to Sports Tours for arranging it!”
If Berlin was anything to go by, we now can’t wait to see what happens at the London Marathon next weekend. Our brilliant Editor, Esther, will be running and reporting back. Make sure you’re subscribed to the Women’s Running podcast for all the updates!
