Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe Boston Red Sox season has not gone according to plan.
Manager Alex Cora and several members of the coaching staff were fired after one month as the Red Sox got off to a 10-17 start. They have not been much better since, as the Red Sox entered Friday with a 27-39 record, last in the AL East.
Although reports indicate that the Red Sox are looking to add to their lineup ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, that may not preclude them from selling as well. Several players could be of interest as teams look to fortify themselves for a postseason push. Let's look at three players who could be on the move in the coming weeks.
Three potential trade pieces for the Boston Red Sox
1. Relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman
Not only has Chapman continued to defy Father Time, but the 38-year-old closer may be in the midst of the best season of his career. He entered Friday with a stellar 0.46 ERA and a 0.915 WHiP over his 19.2 innings, recording 13 saves while striking out 26 batters with nine walks.
The Red Sox should be able to get a sizable return for Chapman. He would be the best reliever available - a flamethrowing lefty with plenty of postseason experience and a strong history as a closer. The Red Sox should get an impressive return for Chapman should he become available.
2. Outfielder Jarren Duran
Duran has been the subject of trade rumors for months since the 2025-26 offseason. Although his overall performance - a .210/.269/.383 batting line with 10 homers and nine doubles - is a disappointment, his bat has warmed up with the weather. Duran has a .270/.323/.539 batting line in his 99 plate appearances since May 17, hitting six homers.
Duran's recent hot streak, coupled with his remaining two-and-a-half years of team control, should give the Red Sox a significant market. His upside, stellar defense in left and the ability to be a catalyst atop the lineup make Duran one of the more intriguing players who could be available.
3. Pitcher Sonny Gray
While the roster as a whole has generally disappointed, Gray has been exactly what the Red Sox expected. He has posted a 3.20 ERA and a 1.243 WHiP over his 56.1 innings, striking out 44 batters with 16 walks.
A solid middle-of-the-rotation starter, Gray has had success in the postseason as well, posting a 3.26 ERA and a 1.385 WHiP over 30.1 innings in the playoffs. He would likely be a rental as he has a $30 million team option for 2027, but Gray should draw a great deal of interest as a dependable starter.
