Right field has been a black hole for the Philadelphia Phillies ever since Bryce Harper made his transition to first base after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2021. 

Philadelphia signed Nick Castellanos to a five-year ($100 million) contract in March 2022 with the hope of addressing that hole, but he failed to do so. Castellanos hit .260 with a .732 OPS over his four seasons with the Phillies, but those offensive numbers declined each year. 

After releasing the veteran in February, the Phillies signed Adolis Garcia (one year, $10 million) to replace him. But, as the team passes the first milepost of the regular season, Garcia has played just as poorly as his predecessor, hitting .200 with a .598 OPS and four home runs. 

Garcia hasn't produced as he did in 2023 with the Rangers, when he hit 39 home runs, but he's provided the Phillies with Gold Glove-caliber defense. With the offensive concerns, the Phillies should be looking elsewhere for right field help.  

Two realistic and one longshot option for the Phillies to replace Adolis Garcia

Los Angeles Angels | Outfielder Jo Adell

The Phillies and Angels have a long history of trades between the two clubs, including deals in 2022 to acquire left fielder Brandon Marsh and in 2024 for right-handed closer Carlos Estevez ahead of their playoff run. 

With a history and Philadelphia's need to upgrade in right field, Jo Adell could be a prime candidate to become a Phillie. After a breakout season in 2025 that included a career-high 37 home runs, Adell has slipped back this season and is hitting .246 with a .677 OPS and seven home runs. 

Garcia has been the better defender, but Adell comes with more team control and costs almost half as much as Garcia ($5.2 million). Adell will just need to cut down on the strikeouts (120-plus in each of the last two seasons).  

Colorado Rockies | Outfielder Tyler Freeman

Infielder/outfielder Tyler Freeman also had a breakout 2025, hitting .281 with a .715 OPS with 20 doubles. 

Freeman has taken a step back this year, batting .250 with a .653 OPS, but he's been impeccable in right field. In 23 games, the former 1st-round pick (2017) has 15 defensive runs saved. 

Adding Freeman to the roster would upgrade the defense in right field and provide the Phillies with a young and controllable right-handed bat. Freeman is in the first year of arbitration and has two more seasons before he becomes a free agent. 

Not known for hitting home runs (career high of seven in 2024), Freeman would add speed (18 stolen bases last year) to the lineup. Freeman's defensive versatility is also a plus. 

Washington Nationals | Outfielder Dylan Crews

Acquiring Crews would be a real long shot for Philadelphia, given that Washington has little incentive to entertain a deal within their own division. 

Just three years removed from being selected second overall in the 2023 Draft, the former LSU Tigers standout has batted .213 with a .635 OPS over parts of the last few seasons. He began 2026 at Triple-A Rochester, hitting .258 with a .777 OPS and five home runs before being recalled to the majors on May 19. Since then, the 24-year-old is hitting .241 with a .646 OPS and a homer.   

Crews is the Nationals' fourth outfielder, with James Wood (.267/.938) and Daylen Lile (.261/.753) locking down the corners and Jacob Young (.237/.683) manning center field. Crews would fulfill all the Phillies' needs: a right-handed bat with potential and team control.
