To say that the Detroit Tigers have gotten off to a disappointing start to the season would be a massive understatement.

A.J. Hinch's team has failed to keep up in the AL Central, and they're currently sitting on a 22-38 record and at the bottom of the division.

As such, and with Tarik Skubal out with an injury, the two-time AL Cy Young winner will inevitably be tangled up in countless trade rumors leading to the Aug. 3 trade deadline.

Considering that, Jim Bowden of The Athletic listed the Chicago Cubs as one of his potential suitors, and he made a compelling argument.

The Chicago Cubs could go all-in for Tarik Skubal

“The Cubs are in position to offer a mix of major-league-ready talent and minor-league prospects. They could offer infielder Matt Shaw, outfielder Kevin Alcántara and right-hander Dominick Reid,” Bowden wrote.

Shaw could provide the Tigers with the type of positional versatility Hinch has always coveted, and Alcántara could also be in the mix to start right away in Michigan.

The Tigers didn't give Skubal the market-resetting contract extension he wants and deserves, and after going through arbitration, it's hard to believe that'll change any time soon.

The Cubs have been one of the streakiest teams in baseball this season, but they're still in a strong position to compete in the NL Central; they just need more consistency on the mound.

Skubal is out with an elbow injury, but he's expected to be back at some point in June.

This season, he's logged a 3-2 record in seven starts, posting a 2.70 ERA with a 0.95 WHIP and 45 strikeouts in 43.1 innings of work, per Baseball Reference.
