The Rangers made one move on deadline day, sending utility infielder Josh Smith to Toronto for rookie reliever Adam Macko. Smith had been in Triple-A and Macko will begin his organizational tenure there as well. They made one other trade early last week, giving up a minor league infielder to get controllable middle reliever Chase Silseth and third catcher Logan O’Hoppe from the Angels.
The A’s and arguably Reds are the only teams that had a quieter deadline. Adding Silseth was a nice bullpen replacement for the injured Jakob Junis on the cheap. They otherwise essentially did nothing that impacted the major league roster in either direction.
Texas was in first place in the AL West at the time of the Silseth trade. They dropped a couple games back in the division and Wild Card picture with last weekend’s sweep by Houston. That briefly led to chatter about a potential teardown, but Jeff Wilson of DLLS Sports and Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News each reported fairly early on deadline day that wasn’t going to be in the cards either. The Rangers are staying the course with a roster that doesn’t feel like a legitimate contender and doesn’t seem to be especially well positioned in the near future.
Some of that was beyond the front office’s control. Jacob deGrom, whose contract contains a full no-trade clause, informed the club he wanted to stay. That very well might’ve killed a deal which could have sent him to the Braves, the team best positioned to absorb a short-term salary for another ace to pair with Chris Sale. The Rangers can’t do anything about that, but they should’ve acted more decisively in one way or another once it was clear deGrom wasn’t in play.
