So much free baseball on Wednesday. Five games went into extra innings yesterday. Three of them were decided by multiple runs, including Detroit’s five-run win in 12 innings.

1. Schlittler shuts out Angels

It’ll be cool for the AL Cy Young race if Cam Schlittler and Dylan Cease remain on the same day for the rest of the season. Cease fired six shutout innings in a blowout win over the Blue Jays. Schlittler also put together a strong outing, striking out nine over eight frames of one-run ball. His lone blemish came on a Vaughn Grissom solo homer to tie the game in the seventh inning. It was Schlittler’s 19th start this season allowing one or fewer runs. That’s a franchise record, passing Ron Guidry, Whitey Ford, and Jack Chesbro, who were all tied at 18 (h/t Sarah Langs of MLB.com). Schlittler leads the AL with a 2.04 ERA.

2. Acuna reaches homer/steal milestone

The Braves and Nationals were scoreless through five innings yesterday. Sean Murphy broke the seal with a three-run homer in the sixth inning. Ronald Acuna Jr. followed with a three-run blast in the seventh inning. Atlanta cruised to a shutout win and picked up a game on the Phillies, who lost a tight one in Arizona. It was the 200th home run of Acuna’s career. At 904 games, he’s the fastest player to reach 200 home runs and 200 stolen bases (h/t again to Sarah Langs of MLB.com). Alfonso Soriano is next on the list at 929 games. Acuna has a .710 OPS since coming off the IL in late July, but he’s popped seven home runs.

3. Rutschman returns to Baltimore

The Red Sox open up a series with the Orioles on Thursday. Catcher Adley Rutschman will be back in Baltimore for the first time since the blockbuster trade that sent him to Boston. Rutschman hasn’t played this week as he deals with an elbow injury, but it isn’t expected to land him on the injured list. The three-time All-Star has struggled so far with the Red Sox. Rutschman has slashed .170/.254/.245 in 15 games with his new team. He’s also struck out at an uncharacteristic 25.4% clip. Baltimore is two games above .500 since the trade deadline. The club is a game and a half out of the final Wild Card spot in the AL.
