Happy 69th birthday to 10-year MLB veteran and 17-year manager, Clint Hurdle!

Hurdle had a forgettable career as a player from 1977-87, spending time with the Royals, Reds, Mets and Cardinals over the course of his decade in the league. But he immediately jumped into managing once his playing days were done, taking over as the skipper for the High-A St. Lucie Mets in 1988. He bounced around organizations until 1994, when he joined the Colorado Rockies system, where he worked his way up to his first Big League manager job in 2002.

He spent eight seasons as the head man in Denver, leading the Rockies to the World Series in the famous “Roctober,” run that ended in a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox in 2007. After starting 18-28 in 2009, Hurdle was fired by Colorado.

After a stint as the Rangers hitting coach, he was hired as the manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2011 season. He went 735-720 in nine seasons in Pittsburgh and was named National League Manager of the Year in 2013 after a 15-win improvement and their first winning-season since 1992. But after missing the postseason in four-straight seasons from 2016-19, Hurdle was fired and decided to retire from baseball.

His retirement didn’t last long, as he returned to the Rockies in an advisory role in 2021 before being named hitting coach and eventually interim-manager in 2025 before the hiring of Warren Schaeffer.

Which brings us to today’s quiz. How many of the skippers to be named Manager of the Year since 2000 can you name in six minutes?

Good luck!
