Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayTeofimo Lopez already has his route to the undisputed welterweight championship planned. Rolando “Rolly” Romero may end those ambitions before they get started.
Lopez faces WBA champion Romero on August 22. He believes beating his old friend will begin a run through the remaining champions at 147 pounds.
“Aiming for my third weight division. For this one at 147, I think I am going to stay until I become undisputed,” Lopez told Adrien Broner via Ring on X. “At 147, I will stay all the way. I told Haney, me and him at the end so we can finally dispute the undisputed.”
“So it is Rolly, Haney,” Broner responded.
“[Ryan] Garcia, and Liam Paro,” Lopez cut in.
It’s a grand plan for a fighter coming off a one-sided unanimous decision loss to Shakur Stevenson last January.
Teofimo has not performed consistently since moving to light welterweight. He struggled against Sandor Martin, had a tough night against Jamaine Ortiz, and labored through 12 rounds with Steve Claggett before Shakur comprehensively outboxed him.
His 12-round decision over Arnold Barboza Jr. in Times Square was not particularly impressive either. Teofimo spent much of that fight landing shots before moving away, using a cautious style similar to the tactics later used against him.
That strategy may return against Romero. Trading with Rolly gives the heavier puncher opportunities Teofimo does not need to provide in his first fight at 147.
Continually retreating, however, may turn the fight into another awkward tactical contest. Romero does not need to look spectacular. He only needs to catch Teofimo often enough to spoil a plan that already includes WBC champion Ryan Garcia, IBF champion Liam Paro, plus WBO champion Devin Haney.
Teofimo wants all four belts. On August 22, we will find out if he can collect the first one.
