Manchester City have found themselves at the centre of a storm during the international break, after an independent commission found them guilty of 114 breaches of Premier League rules.

The club are set to appeal the verdict, and released a club statement which read: "Manchester City Football Club can confirm that at 7pm on Thursday 1st October 2026 the Club lodged its comprehensive Appeal against the opinion of the Premier League Commission, in relation to the Premier League disciplinary matter.

"The Club’s firm position is that, on multiple grounds, the opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact and is unsafe."

The Manchester Evening News' Chief City writer Simon Bajkowski added: "City are appealing the guilty verdicts because they think they have cause and they think they have evidence but also they have paid people very handsomely to be in the room for the 11 weeks when it took place.

"And the reason why it stunned people at City when they were found guilty of so many things is that these people are experienced in knowing how a case was going and the feeling after those 11 weeks was certainly not 'we've lost on every count.' So there is a sense that a different set of eyes might have a different view."

There has been talk about stripping trophies and a range of other punishments, including receiving heavy points deductions and potential expulsion from the Premier League, and talkSPORT reporter Alan Brazil has now revealed what he's been hearing about the situation.

Speaking live on talkSPORT, Brazil said: "I'll tell you what I've heard, right, and people can shoot me down in flames, and it might be nonsense, right, so I'm not saying 'I got it first', none of that rubbish, I'm not saying that, I'm hearing 60 point deduction."

The reporter went on to add he doesn't know whether the potential punishment would be applied this season or next season, while Ally McCoist stated that many people may not feel it is a harsh enough penalty.

Considering the charges cover a nine-year period, from 2009-10 to 2017-18, it is clear to see why a one-season deduction may be considered unfair by rival clubs.

However, should Brazil prove to be correct, City would theoretically have to amass 100 points in order to reach the 40-point mark, which has long been considered the benchmark in terms of avoiding relegation.
