Strange rackets to string

I was talking with a fellow stringer on what we encountered through our years of stringing.
He told me he once had a racket which had no grommets in the middle region, but the string went around the frame, trough gutters. He could not remember the brand and model. It made me curious to find pictures of it. Does anyone know which racket he is talking about and how it looks like?

Think there were also some Prince rackets with had big holes in the frame and no grommets. It's easier to find the tennis rackets online but I'm sure they did it on badminton rackets too.

The O3 rackets. In 1995 they also had a Prince Axis series, I learned how to string rackets on those rackets.

Absolutely. I restrung one recently, the top part of the Prince racket had slits, instead of grommets. It was just for the mains string though.

I done a few Prince o3 rackets recently - definitely a bit different on the mains becase if they line the up hole straight with the gripper, the string is just floating in the middle of the hole when you clamp it.

Redson also make grommetless rackets but their holes are smaller.

Regardless of the grimmicks for the grommets / holes, most badminton rackets still follow the same patterns; the single pass grommets on the bottom of the nextage rackets threw me off initially, but once you do a few of them, it isn't that bad

Carlton also has some rackets with a grommet strip on 3 and 9 o clock, but that makes it that you have to start a certain way, or it won't follow the pattern in the strip and go over the edge...

I hate carlton so much

Yes that did exist, I saw one once but never got to string it. It's a Carlton razor racquette.

Found a picture https://www.badmintonalley.com/Carl...acket_T113136_p/racket-carlton-razor-v1.1.htmthis.

carlton prototype. then renamed razor. (?)
i owned several of them.. still have them now wall flowered as unique rackets.

the only pain, was that you had to start on the correct side for the cross or the grooves in the middle of the frame wont line up and you have to restart the cross from the other side. you get used to if pretty quick. interesting thing was that not all the frames i had had the grooves in the same direction.. hence prototype i suppose.

Carlton also made a racket, (i cant recall the name) that had 3 knots on top and 1 at the bottom.
reverse strung.
the mains tie off at the 10 and 2 oclock positions.

Redson SG rackets are great.. but the new 100% grommetless ESG does not support 2 piece/4 knots stringing. which is annoying..

found a pic of mine that clearly shows the design.

I used to string a version of the Carlton Prototype with only 20 Mains. That makes it even more interesting!

Yep that caught me out on one occasion. 🤦😂

Yes, I hate those Cartlon Razor rackets. The string kept slipping out of the grooves when pulling the string, even at 22-24 lbs.
At one point I refused to string those rackets. There was only one player who had those rackets. In the end he ended up stringing himself, before he replaced those rackets with normal ones.

I recently I had to string this old Oliver racket. I had to adjust the main poles to make the racket fit in the machine. It was fun though.

Ashway spiral has same concept as the carlton with no grommet but for the mains instead.Screenshot 2026-11-05 090739.png
