UFC featherweight contender Steve Garcia shared his first thoughts on Diego Lopes’ come-from-behind KO at UFC Freedom 250.

UFC featherweight Steve Garcia made Mixed Martial Arts history on Sunday when he became the first fighter to enter the Octagon on the White House lawn at UFC Freedom 250. Garcia, who entered UFC Freedom 250 on an impressive win streak, squared off with former title challenger Diego Lopes in the opening fight.

Garcia’s sharp performance in Round 1 led many to believe he was on the verge of an upset to kick off the night. But in Round 2, after a sloppy start, Lopes battered Garcia en route to a come-from-behind TKO victory.

It was a disappointing setback for Garcia, after he was on the verge of potentially skipping the line for a featherweight title shot. Recent wins over Calvin Kattar, Melquizael Costa, and Kyle Nelson proved Garcia’s standing in the UFC featherweight title picture.

After the rare setback, Garcia has made his first public remarks since his loss on the White House lawn.

Steve Garcia promises he’s ‘not far off’ after brutal KO at UFC White House

In a recent Instagram post, Garcia addressed his performance in the UFC Freedom 250 opener.

“Sunday night didn’t go as planned, but I’m blessed to be a part of UFC history. God is still King. I’ve fallen before, and if I’m gonna lose to someone, at least it was to the class act of Diego Lopes,” Garcia posted.

“I’m not far off—I will be back. To all my haters, enjoy your celebration while you can. Y’all remember what happened the last time I lost. Thank you to all my fans, sponsors, family, teammates, Jackson-Wink MMA, and my management. Love y’all. God bless.”

Lopes issued a classy response to Garcia in a comment on the post.

“Thank you for the fight, I only have words of admiration for you and your team, brother,” Lopes responded to Garcia.
