Shreyas Iyer was recently put in the hot seat and asked to pick current Indian players he would back in some of the most memorable situations from India’s 2007 T20 World Cup triumph. The light-hearted segment saw the batter match members of the current squad with iconic moments from the inaugural T20 World Cup.

With India preparing to face West Indies in the first T20I, Iyer was asked to make some difficult choices, including who he would trust in the bowl-out against Pakistan, the final over of the final and Yuvraj Singh’s famous six-sixes moment.

Shreyas Iyer backs Jasprit Bumrah for final over duty

When asked who he would trust to bowl the final over instead of Joginder Sharma in the 2007 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, Iyer went with Jasprit Bumrah. The India fast bowler was also among Iyer’s five picks for the famous bowl-out against Pakistan.

Alongside Bumrah, Iyer named Abhishek Sharma, himself, Ishan Kishan and Yash Thakur for the decisive contest. Iyer was then asked to replace some of the other players who played key roles during India’s title-winning campaign. For Yuvraj Singh’s famous six sixes in an over against Stuart Broad, Iyer chose Shivam Dube.

Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi and Tilak Varma get the nod

For Gautam Gambhir’s crucial contribution in the final against Pakistan, Iyer backed Tilak Varma. He also picked Axar Patel to replicate Irfan Pathan’s important spells during the tournament. Iyer chose Ravi Bishnoi for the role of Harbhajan Singh, who played a key part in India’s semi-final victory over Australia.

The selections sparked some debate among fans on social media, with some agreeing with Iyer’s choice of Bumrah for the final over while others questioned several of his picks. The segment was part of Star Sports’ build-up to India’s first T20I against West Indies and offered a fun hypothetical look at how Iyer would recreate some of the defining moments from India’s historic 2007 campaign with the current squad.
