Adam Azim’s dominant stoppage of Steve Claggett has strengthened his case for a world title opportunity, according to trainer Shane McGuigan. After watching Azim stop the veteran Canadian in three rounds, McGuigan said the unbeaten contender is developing into a complete fighter and could soon enter the championship picture at 140 pounds.
“I feel like he’s progressing all the time. I feel like he’s looking really, really mature and developed. He’s learned how to fight inside. He used to be an out-and-out boxer, move, a counter puncher,” said McGuigan to Boxing King Media.
“You got to learn to work in that mid to short range. You need to get good at that. And if you’ve got the natural attributes that he has, boxing speed, counter punching, vicious puncher, mix it in with that calmness on the inside, you’ve got yourself a dangerous fighter.”
McGuigan also revealed the damage Azim inflicted on Claggett during the fight.
“I thought maybe we’d hurt him to the body. But he kept getting into overreach and as he was overreaching, he was timing him, and I think he’s broke his orbital. He’s going to hospital,” said Shane about the injuries Claggett suffered.
“I was chatting to him in the dressing room. He says, ‘I’ve never been hit like that.’ So that’s a big statement.”
With Richardson Hitchins moving up in weight and the IBF title picture changing, McGuigan believes Azim could soon find himself in line for a major opportunity.
“We’re not going to jump to any conclusions. We’re just going to go and figure out the lay of the land,” said McGuigan.
“When a guy like Hitchins moves up, there’s vacancy throughout. We might be right in line for the winner of Delgado and Biyarslanov. We’ll be hopefully ready for the winner of that, or if another governing body wants to step forward and give us a shot, we’ll take that as well.”
Azim improved to 15-0 with his latest victory and remains one of Britain’s most highly regarded contenders at 140 pounds.
