Shane Fury has admitted that he would not be entirely confident in seeing his brother, Tyson, step through the ropes and face one of boxing’s fastest-rising stars.

‘The Gypsy King’ comes off a seventh-round stoppage of Mariusz Wach last month, which followed his unanimous decision victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov in April.

In both performances, though, Fury seemed a far cry from the man who delivered a vicious seventh-round finish against Deontay Wilder in 2020, for instance.

But of course, it is only natural that the 38-year-old has lost a step or two, especially with the Makhmudov win materialising around 16 months after his second defeat to Oleksandr Usyk.

Even at this stage in his career, however, Shane remains convinced that his brother has the beating of heavyweights champions Agit Kabayel and Daniel Dubois.

In fact, the only man he would be apprehensive about sticking him in with is Moses Itauma, who faces Filip Hrgovic at London’s O2 Arena next Saturday.

If he emerges victorious, the 21-year-old will become the youngest world heavyweight champion since Mike Tyson dethroned Trevor Berbick in 1986.

But even with Itauma having not yet claimed the vacant IBF title, Shane Fury has told Fight Your Corner that he would strongly advise Tyson to stay away from the precocious talent.

“The last man I want to see Tyson in the ring with would be Moses Itauma, I wouldn’t want to see it.

18 months ago, I seen them two go for war [in sparring]. I mean, war. It was pay-per-view. He [Itauma] is only going one way, 18 months ago it was war, it was really good to watch.”

Fury and Itauma have previously shared multiple rounds of sparring and so it seems Shane has already seen enough to steer his brother elsewhere.
