Santi Aldama will miss Spain’s upcoming FIBA World Cup qualifying games as he continues his recovery from right knee surgery.

The 25-year-old made an effort to be available for the national team, but Spain’s medical staff and team officials ultimately decided against accelerating his return.

The priority is allowing Aldama to fully recover ahead of the 2026-27 NBA season with the Dallas Mavericks.

The Spanish Basketball Federation and head coach Chus Mateo praised Aldama for his commitment and desire to represent his country.

Despite his absence, Mateo will not call up another player, leaving Spain with a 14-man roster.

Spain will begin the second round of European qualifying against Portugal in Zaragoza on August 28 before traveling to Athens to face Greece on August 31.

The team enters the window in a strong position after posting a 5–1 record in Group I.

Greece will also be without a major NBA player, with Giannis Antetokounmpo unavailable for the upcoming games.

Aldama remains considered an important part of Spain’s future, but the national team has chosen to prioritize his long-term health rather than risk bringing him back too quickly.
