It is no secret the American League may be as weak as ever this season. 

Because of that, several teams will be hesitant to label themselves as sellers ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. One team that is not on the fringe and has the second worst record is the Kansas City Royals, who according to Ken Rosenthal, are expected to hang onto their top two trade targets.

Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha are likely to stay

According to Rosenthal, Kansas City will listen to offers on Lugo and Wacha but are expected to want a "massive" return in order to move either of the two.

A massive asking price for each of the two is a bit confusing on the Royals part, as Lugo has been one of the worst pitchers in baseball this season and Wacha, despite being an All-Star for the first time in 11 seasons, has expected pitching numbers that are quite alarming.

What teams may be willing to meet the asking price?

It is unlikely that the Royals will have any team meet their asking price for Lugo or Wacha, but if they do, there are a few teams that desperately need help in their starting rotation.

The Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs are the only teams in MLB this season with a negative WAR from their starting pitchers. Both have been struck by numerous injuries throughout the season, a major reason for the decline in pitching production.

If either of those teams feel that their pitching lab and coaches can fix either of the Kansas City arms, it makes sense for them to make a phone call and see exactly what the asking price would be.
