Rookie Colt Emerson continues to prove his worth to Mariners

The impact that top prospect Colt Emerson has had on the Seattle Mariners since he made his MLB debut is undisputed.

Since his call-up, Emerson has ranked sixth in MLB with a 116 wRC+, ninth with .761 OPS, seventh with a 0.97 Win Probability Added (WPA), first with a 2.71 ERA and second with a 3.13 FIP.

He also owns a .271 batting average with three home runs, eight RBI, 13 hits and a .935 OPS across 48 at-bats.

The Mariners own an 11-4 record since his call-up and have won eight in a row, leading the AL West with a 33-29 record and 2.5 games up on the Texas Rangers

The impact of young prospects on a struggling ball club is underrated. The M’s since Colt Emerson got called up:

116 wRC+ (6th)
.761 OPS (9th)
0.97 WPA (7th)
2.71 ERA (1st)
3.13 FIP (2nd)

They are 11-4 in that stretch, winners of 8 straight, & lead the AL West!…

How Colt Emerson has made a valuable impression

The Mariners front office showcased its trust and commitment to Emerson by signing him to an eight-year, $95 million contract extension on March 31. So far, he's proved how he's more than deserving of the extension.

The Mariners' No. 1-ranked prospect has racked up eight extra-base hits, demonstrating his clutch hitting at the early stages of his MLB career. But aside from the obvious offensive impact he has provided, he also offers defensive versatility. While his natural position is shortstop, he has also been positioned at third base, adapting to the position in order to keep his bat in the lineup.

But third base is not exactly foreign to him, as he has played 20 games at third base across his minor league career. His defensive flair at hot corner was on full display against the New York Mets on Tuesday. He made a diving stop at the top of the eighth inning to take a hit away from MJ Melendez. In addition, he made a remarkable game-ending catch in the ninth inning by bolting into foul territory to make a sliding grab to seal the Mariners' 8-3 victory.
