Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayRomero will defend the WBA welterweight title against former two-division champion Teofimo Lopez in a joint Prime Video and DAZN pay-per-view event
Rolly Romero will make the first defense of his WBA welterweight title against Teofimo Lopez on August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The championship fight, confirmed by ESPN’s Andreas Hale, will headline a joint pay-per-view on Prime Video and DAZN.
Romero (17-2, 13 KOs) won the WBA welterweight title on May 2, 2025, upsetting Ryan Garcia by unanimous decision after scoring a knockdown during the second round. The victory gave Romero the biggest win of his career and made him a world champion in a second weight class.
Teofimo (22-2, 13 KOs) enters the fight looking to add another world title after previous championship runs at lightweight and light welterweight. His only defeats came against George Kambosos Jr. in 2021 and Shakur Stevenson in his most recent outing.
The matchup matches Romero’s aggressive, power-based style against Teofimo’s speed, timing and counterpunching. Both fighters have built reputations for their confidence outside the ring, which should add to the promotion in the weeks leading up to fight night.
Critics have questioned the sporting merit of the fight. Romero has gone 14 months without defending his WBA welterweight title against a mandatory challenger, and Teofimo enters the bout after a one-sided defeat to Shakur Stevenson in January. That has fueled the perception among some fans that the matchup is being driven more by business considerations than recent form.
CONFIRMED: Rolly Romero vs. Teofimo Lopez for WBA welterweight title set for August 22 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be available as both a Prime Video and DAZN PPV.
