Rolly Romero feels he should still be the WBA welterweight titleholder following his majority decision loss to Teofimo Lopez.

Romero put the gold at stake against Lopez inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this past Saturday. Lopez was getting the better of his opponent early on, but he faced adversity in the fifth round when Romero rocked him with a left hook and a right hand. From that point on, Romero continued to look for the counter power punch, but he never really found that same success again.

It led to moments of uneventful action with short bursts of excitement all the way until the final bell in round 12. When the score totals were read, the judges had it much closer than the DAZN broadcast team did. Lopez ended up winning the fight and the WBA gold with one judge giving him a 115-113 score and another handing him the 116-112 verdict. The lone judge who didn’t give Lopez the fight scored it a draw at 114-114.

Romero didn’t have many words for Chris Mannix during his post-fight interview. He simply gave thanks to God before walking away. The former champion had a little bit more to say during the post-fight press conference, slamming the decision (h/t BoxingScene).

“Look at my face – he landed two clean shots. That’s not enough to beat a champion,” Romero said. “I hurt him multiple times. I want a rematch, for sure.”

Romero believes that if any other boxer on his level delivered a similar performance, they would be lauded for having a brilliant performance.

“When somebody else does this, it’s a master class,” Romero continued. “When I do it, it’s all political.”

With the loss to “The Takeover,” Romero suffers the third defeat of his pro boxing career. It is his first decision loss, as his prior defeats were TKO stoppages against Gervonta Davis and Isaac Cruz.
