Indicative of the Colorado Rockies' 2026 season, a player made franchise history in a loss. And even more importantly, showcased himself ahead of MLB's Aug. 3 trade deadline. 

Doing his part and then some, Hunter Goodman smashed three home runs and drove in all but one of the Rockies' runs on the day. However, his big game wasn't enough on Sunday, as Colorado fell 9-6 to the Cincinnati Reds. 

Hunter Goodman achieved a franchise first on Sunday

Despite the loss, Goodman put together the first type of performance for the franchise. With three home runs and five RBIs against the Reds, Goodman became the first Rockies player to record multiple three-homer games in one season.

Colorado's catcher also went yard three times on June 27 in Minnesota, helping the Rockies beat the Twins, 8-5.

Like on Sunday, Goodman also put five runs on the board during his first game with a trio of home runs.

Goodman has something over the Rockies' legends

And to put Goodman's slugging prowess in perspective, Baseball Hall of Famers Larry Walker (he did it three times), Todd Helton and Carlos Gonzalez are the only other Rockies to have multiple three-homer games throughout their entire careers.

Oddly enough, Goodman's trifecta of home runs may help enhance the likelihood he's a former Rockies player soon enough. Goodman snapped his July power outage on Sunday — his last home run before hitting three on one day was back on opening day of the month on July 1.

Goodman is in the middle of a career-best season overall

One away from matching his career-high, Goodman now has 30 home runs in 92 games and 346 at-bats so far this season. He's making 2026 his new personal best - he also has 56 RBIs, 62 runs scored and 25 doubles with a slash line of .257/.326/.561.  

But unfortunately for the Rockies, Goodman's heroics haven't been enough to turn Colorado into a contender. With another loss and another series loss, the Rockies fell to 3-7 in their last 10 games. They are firmly in last place in the National League West at 40-61.

And at 26 and just hitting his prime, Goodman has immense value as a strong catcher with tons of power. Since the Rockies are out of the race, it's certainly possible they receive an offer they can't refuse and ship Goodman off to a contender.
