Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayNot all All-Stars are created equal, with some more deserving than others. But in the case of Colorado Rockies catcher Hunter Goodman, even with how great he has been this season, he has been overlooked.
Hunter Goodman is currently fifth in the All-Star ballot voting
As of the last tallying (June 15), the Rockies' backstop finished in fifth place in the National League voting for catchers (110,450). That's 192,825 less than Milwaukee Brewers catcher William Contreras (303,240) and 862,363 less than the leading vote getter, Atlanta Braves' Drake Baldwin (972,813).
Contreras's place on the list is deserving, as the two-time All-Star is second to Baldwin in batting average (.298 to.291), but Goodman has shown more power than either. The 26-year-old leaders catchers in home runs (21, seven more than Baldwin) and is leading in stolen bases (five).
According to MLB.com's Will Leitch, those numbers and his OPS -- Goodman has the second-best OPS (.858) to Baldwin (.951) -- could help propel him to jump some places in the next round of voting.
"Goodman’s power is no fluke: He hit 31 homers last season and is well on his way to 40 this year. Forty homers for a catcher?" wrote Leitch. "That’s a tempting guy to vote for. And while you might be ready to chalk some of that up to the Coors Field effect, Goodman actually has been better on the road this season, slugging .593 with 13 of his 20 total homers away from Denver entering play Wednesday."
The head scratcher in the top five for catcher is Philadelphia Phillies' J.T. Realmuto, occupying the third spot (446,915). This is most likely due to the All-Star Game being held in Philadelphia and fans voting for a well-known player like Realmuto.
Compared to Goodman, Realmuto has five home runs, an OPS of .607 and has played 19 fewer games.
The Rockies will get a participant for the All-Star Game, but Goodman has shown himself deserving of the nomination rather than being selected to fill a spot.
