The Boston Red Sox have floored rival executives with their acquisition of Adley Rutschman, or at least what it took to get him.

The Red Sox acquired Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday to bolster their playoff hopes.

However, to acquire Rutschman, the team gave up three of its top prospects, including No. 49 overall prospect Anthony Eyanson.

Sean McAdam of MassLive reported that other teams were “stunned” by what the Red Sox gave up for Rutschman. One evaluator told McAdam the deal was “literally one of the most ridiculous trades I’ve seen in 30 years.”

Some people in the game are completely stunned by what the Red Sox gave up for Adley Rutschman. Said one evaluator from another org.: "I'm absolutely dumbfounded by this…This is literally one of the most ridiculous trades I've seen in 30 years."

ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel echoed that sentiment.

“They got three real (prospects) plus a big-league catcher for a guy in Rutschman whose value was down last year,” McDaniel said of the Orioles. “This seems like Boston really pushed some chips in to the point where people in the industry are wondering how they ended up with this being the package.”

The Red Sox are unquestionably taking a risk by giving up premium value for Rutschman. However, they will be able to keep Rutschman through next season, and they are already one of the hottest teams in baseball this year. They see a chance to win a championship and are seizing the initiative.

Other reports make it clear that the Red Sox aimed high at the deadline. They were clearly willing to give up a lot to get who they wanted.
