Orgo-Life the new way to the future Advertising by AdpathwayThe NBA referees' union confirmed that Minnesota Timberwolves guard LaMelo Ball traveled before making a 3-pointer in Wednesday night's 131-106 win over the Miami Heat. The basket broke a 39-39 tie in the second quarter.
The referee union posted a clip of the play on X and explained the violation.
"For everyone asking, 'how is this legal?' It's not!" the referees' union wrote. "He gathers with his right foot on the floor and would be permitted two steps by rule (left-right). He takes four steps after gathering the ball and travels."
Ball's brother, Lonzo Ball, also called it a travel on social media shortly after the play.
Ball, who was making his Timberwolves debut, still denied traveling when ESPN asked him about it after the game.
"He hatin'. He hatin'," said Ball. "See, I gotta give him a call right now, cause with the family, he knows what you're supposed to do. Even if I'm wrong, I'm right. That's how it goes."
Ball finished with 21 points. Minnesota acquired him from the Charlotte Hornets this offseason.
