The Red Sox are expected to designate left-hander Danny Coulombe for assignment, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. The veteran tossed the final two innings of Saturday’s win over the Mets. As Cotillo points out, Coulombe’s contract included performance bonuses that start at 30 appearances. Tonight was his 29th outing of the season.

Coulombe was set to earn $75K after 30 games pitched. He’d get another $75K each for hitting 35, 40, and 45 appearances. The bonus would double to $150K if Coulombe reached 50 games, and continue if he made it to 55 and 60. The veteran had additional incentives related to days on the active roster. Coulombe would make $250K after 30 days on the active roster or the injured list (as long as the injury wasn’t related to his throwing arm). He’d get an additional $250K at increments of 30 days, up to 150.

Boston initially signed Coulombe to a one-year, $2.25MM deal with $750K available in appearance-based incentives, but the contract was altered after issues arose during the medical review. The agreement was adjusted to a $1MM guarantee plus the aforementioned roster bonuses, which total $1.25MM.

The 36-year-old Coulombe lowered his ERA to 4.50 with two scoreless frames against New York. It was the first time he’s worked more than an inning this season. Coulombe walked three in the appearance. His strikeout-to-walk ratio sits at 10:18 in 24 innings with Boston. The veteran missed time in May with a neck injury.

Coulombe has pitched for six teams in his 12 big-league seasons. He doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, but he’s delivered a sub-3.00 ERA in each of the past four years. He heads to DFA limbo with a solid chance to find another home. Boston has five days to work out a trade or place him on waivers. If he goes unclaimed, he has enough service time to forego a minor league assignment and enter free agency.
