Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu is best known for his defense. On Monday, he carved his way into major league history with his bat.

Abreu led off the bottom of the fifth by belting a fly ball deep into the center field corner. The ball hit the top of the wall, bounding past outfielder TJ Friedl, who had fallen down. Abreu raced around the bases, sliding into home with an inside-the-park home run to give the Red Sox an 8-4 lead against the Cincinnati Reds.

Former outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was the last Red Sox player to hit an inside-the-park homer at Fenway, doing so in 2011. This was also the first inside-the-park home run for any player at Fenway since 2018.

Abreu was not done. With two out and the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning, he belted the first pitch he saw from Reds reliever Connor Phillips for a grand slam, capping off a 13-run explosion for the Red Sox.

With his eighth-inning grand slam, Abreu carved his way into the major league record books. He became the sixth player in major league history and the second Red Sox player (Jim Tabor was with the Sox) to hit an inside-the-park homer and a grand slam in the same game

Wilyer Abreu is the 6th player to hit an inside-the-park home run AND a grand slam (separately) in a game, joining:

8/3/58 Roger Maris
7/4/39 Jim Tabor
8/4/30 Charlie Gehringer
7/4/1923 Everett Scott
6/5/1890 Jocko Fields

Abreu is in the midst of an impressive first half. He has produced a solid .256/.323/.496 batting line in his 269 plate appearances, hitting a career-best 16 homers. He has continued his impressive defense as well, ranking second among AL right fielders with nine runs saved and is tied for the lead with two double plays.
